So...I had a doctor appointment yesterday and baby has flipped since last week and is now breech. We're giving him/her until Monday to flip back around and I've already been trying all sorts of different position/exercises to encourage flipping. All sorts of crazy suggestions on the internet.
But if baby doesn't turn I have the choice to do an external version next week in the hospital with an epidural and my doctor will try to get him/her to flip. Success for this isn't guaranteed and baby could just flip back before I go into labor.
Or I could just schedule a C-section.
I'm just looking for some thoughts here. Things have been so good/smooth for me that I haven't even thought about/considered c-section. I'm also not sure about this version because it sounds like a fair amount of pain if there's an epidural involved.
I know I have to make my own decision but again, just looking for some thoughts/perspectives. Would you try the external version for the chance that you could deliver naturally? Or cut to the chase and schedule the c-section? Should c-section be my absolute last resort? Or is it not that big of a deal.
Thanks in advance!
Re: 38 weeks tomorrow and breech
You need to weigh your thoughts on vaginal delivery..if you REALLY want a vaginal delivery...try the version..it's uncomfortable and there ARE risks, but some dr's are pretty good at them..there's about a 50% success rate
For me, I'm just doing a c-section with no version because my baby has been breech for many weeks, he rarely moves his head..it seems pretty lodged in my ribs..so I believe he is breech for a reason..plus he is large..and that makes it a bit more challenging. My dr is really good at versions and would be willing to try, but I told him, I'm ok with a scheduled c-section..I dont feel like I'm missing out any..we'll still have one heck of a birthday celebration for our little guy..and the risks then are more so the risks of a surgery..to me.. rather than the risks of a version which are largely more directly towards my LO.
I personally think that if there is a chance to deliver a healthy baby with a healthy momma, then vaginal births are always better than surgical, I mean, they were made to come out that way.
I would try the version, a few moments of pain won't compare to the added recovery time from a major surgery. However, if you're at peace with the idea of a surgical birth, you might as well go for it! No point in agonizing over the decision if its something that you're okay with.
I am in the same boat, but I am only 36and a half weeks. I have an u/s today to see if she has flipped, but I dont feel like she has.
For me, I dont think I want the version. It is only 50% effective. it can be painful and there are risks. I dont think the chance of success is worth it. Then again, I will wait and see what my doctor says. But for most of my friends that this has happened to - the doctors have suggested a c/s.
I have a question - if they do the version, do they induce right away? What if the baby flipped back!
I believe the version will be more than a few minutes of pain because I think there will be recovery afterward. But obviously much less than a c/s recovery.
rkto, I wasn't at all prepared to get this news yesterday so I wasn't prepared with questions. I'll have more questions when we go back on Monday to see if LO has flipped. But I have the impression that you do the version and then just wait for natural birth. You don't get induced unless you go past your due date and would have been induced anyway. So yes, there is the opportunity for LO to flip back. Not only does the version have to work, LO needs to stay there.
Like I said, just trying to wrap my head around all of this, make some preliminary decisions and get a list of questions prepared for our appointment on Monday.
The good news is that baby had recently moved and we're trying to get him/her to move back on his/her own. Baby is still very active so if you come to my door and I'm on all fours or laying down with a TON of pillows under my butt, you'll know why!
I just found out yesterday that my baby is now breech. I am 39w2d (tickers are off). I am only able to meet with my OB on tuesday to discuss options which I am assuming will include scheduling a c-section or external version. I personally will be trying everything possible to avoid a c-section because I think that if you can do vaginal birth it is best.. The nurses at the hospital I am delivering at also informed me that many of the OBs will actually attempt vaginal breech births, but it all depends on which one is on-call. My one co-worker vaginally delivered her 9pound 7ounce breech baby so it is possible to do.
Ultimately the choice is up to you, just be sure to discuss all of your options with your OB. And in the mean time there are lots of ways to naturally flip your baby on your own. https://brendalane.suite101.com/turning-a-breech-baby-a7421
my baby is a party animal. so whenever she seems to be moving a lot, I get down on all fours to see if she wants to flip but then she stops moving! I am pretty sure that the time she flipped over, I was standing up because I was at work and it was super painful. I thought I was going to have to go home and then the pain suddenly stopped.
I found out yesterday my baby is breech also. I have a version scheduled for next Wednesday. My Dr doesn't use an epidural for it though. He said if it causes that much pain he wants to know and he wil stop. He wants to know my pain tolerance and if I can't handle it than its not healthy.
With that said, he has not had to do an emergency c-section due to a version he has performed in his 20 yrs of practice. And he has been at his current practice for 10 and none of his partners have had to either.
I want a natural med-free birth. A c-section was never on my mind until my little guy decided to be difficult. I will try pretty much anything before having to do a section!
My baby girl has been breech since 32 weeks and I have tried doing all the exercises. Still breech at 36 weeks and I will be having an u/s tomorrow at 38wk 4days to check again. I have a c-section scheduled for the 11th. At 36 weeks they gave me the option of the version or c-section. We decided to schedule the c-section to allow more time for her to hopefully flip on her own. We chose against the version since it can put the baby into distress and if something happened, they would have to deliver right away, that is why they do it in a hospital. I didn't want to force her into something that could possibly cause her heart rate to drop.
My original plan was all natural but with a c-section at 39 weeks, I am now ok with that too. Obviously it is a longer recovery but having that firm date is nice knowing when she'll arrive. I have also heard a few stories of baby's flipping 1 to 3 hours just before so you never know. It is nature, I don't think we should try to force the baby into a downward position. Trust our baby and our body to know what's best and what to do. If baby doesn't turn, maybe it wasn't meant to be...
I haven't posted much on this board, but have been following throughout my pregnancy. We found out at our 38 week appointment last week that our baby is breech. I had the external version yesterday morning. No epidural, but was given an injection to relax the uterus and prevent contractions. I'm not gonna lie, it was uncomfortable and at times, painful. And today, I'm still pretty sore, but not unbearable- more like I did an extreme ab workout or something. Unfortunately, it wasn't successful for me- little one wouldn't budge in either direction, but I feel like I've tried everything possible to see if she'd flip. For me, I was hoping to avoid a c-section, since it is a major surgery, no matter how routine, and recovery time is longer. However, it's become apparent that little one is quite content where she is, so if she needs to be born via c-section, that's how it's going to be.
Best of luck with your decision! Other things I tried: spinning babies, acupuncture, chiropractic adjustments, putting a flashlight on my belly to see if she'd follow the light, DH talking to her at the bottom of my belly to see if she'd follow his voice. We figured- it's all worth trying!
