I was just about to dive into some Ben and Jerry's ice cream last night when a friend told me that I shouldn't eat it because there is raw egg in it. Does anyone know if that's true? I thought anything sold at a supermarket chain had to be pasteurized and safe. Now the ice cream is just sitting in my freezer
Re: Is Ben and Jerry's Safe?
That same question was brought up back when I had DD#1. Double check their website (they have ingredients listed) but I'm pretty sure they are all fine.
Ben and Jerry's is fine. If you make homemade ice cream, make sure to substitute pasteurized egg yolks for fresh egg yolks. I strongly suspect that any commercially prepared ice creams that use egg yolks do the same.
Also, if you're ever in doubt, call up the company and ask (or send an email.) As an added bonus, a lot of companies will mail you coupons just for contacting them.
they pasteurize. just like any other commercial company that uses pooled eggs in their products.
plus i think ice cream uses egg yolks, not the whites where salmonella often lives (risk doesn't go away completely by this "separation", especially if the egg is older)
what are they going to tell pregnant women to avoid next!
