Worried about Celiac disease

O I am highly gluten intolerant.  I'm pretty sure it started in college a few years ago.  I was getting really sick and after no doctors could figure out why I took it on myself to eliminate foods from my diet and when I cut out gluten I immediately felt a million times better.   Same thing happened to my sister so I'm pretty sure it's celiac.  I've never gotten officially diagnosed because I know I would have to eat gluten for a few weeks before they could test me and I know that it would just make me really really sick and I just don't have time for that.

So now I'm worried about my son.  He's still a baby so I have some time but I'm not sure how I should approach his diet and the gluten issue.  Should I raise him GF or let him eat it knowing that there is the possibility he will get celiac disease.  Has anyone else been in this situation?

  • Definitely talk to a pediatrician about this.

A gf diet can be hard to follow, especially when the kids are in daycare and school. So personally, I'd try feeding him gluten at an appropriate time before he has to start school so you can see how he reacts.

I agree.  DS has been GF since May of last year.  We've been able to manage it relatively well, but I'm nervous about when he starts pre school and past that, when I have less control and when he gets upset because he can't eat what all the other kids are eating.

I wouldnt CHOOSE to make him GF if I didn't have to!

  • I have celiac disease. I would not put a child on a gluten free diet without cause. Yes, your son does have a higher chance of developing celiac since you have it. But the odds are much greater that he won't have it. The approach we are taking is to periodically get the celiac blood test for my kids so we can catch it early, but keep them eating a standard diet until they are diagnosed (hopefully they never are).
