January 2012 Moms

what have you been putting off?

we really REALLY need to write a will.

for some reason it is the one thing that both DH and I routinely just ignore. we have life insurance set up and retirement accounts, education savings for DS. We are really good at taking care of all of that stuff. but for some reason we have yet to put a will together and figure out how to handle everything (i.e. create a trust? I don't know?)

anyone else totally ignoring something major? make me feel better.

Re: what have you been putting off?

  • Right there in the same boat with you. Everything is together but the will.

  • Well, now I realize I've been unknowingly putting that off as well but... income taxes. We had to file an extension because my husband was part-owner of a company and then got fired and we were waiting on the paperwork. I think we have a week or so left to do them...... also sweeping the floor. Its been an entire week since I did it last. Gross.
  • We need to write up our will as well.  I also want to increase Hubbys life insurance since I'll be a SAHM.

The most pressing issue that I've been putting off at the moment is paying bills.  Money has been tight and it's depressing to have to watch what little we have go to "boring" stuff.

Same here...no will (yet).  We also have talked about the educational savings but haven't started it yet.  With this being our first, we're a little unsure of the process.

DH got life insurance this week!

I don't think you can start the educational savings account till they're born, so you're not behind on that one! good news! Stick out tongue

  • Mine's a dirty little secret. We've been married for almost a year, and I have yet to change my last name. I haven't put it off because I don't want to, especially since my LN is one of the three most common U.S. names, and with H's I'll be one of eight in the U.S. I just hate all the government agencies and lines. Ugh. My goal was end of summer. That flew by, and then it was to be done at least before our first anniversary. I have 11 days to go...

It actually wasn't nearly the ordeal I thought it was going to be. It was much harder for me to adjust to using the new name, than it was to actually making the legal change. good luck!!

  • Ugh my list will make you feel better....

    Will

    RRSPS's

    Life Insurance

Cord blood banking (still up in the air, but I need to research and make a decision)

Finding a daycare (I just don't want to put him in daycare :( )

    I'm pretty sure there's more...

  • I'm procrastinating on finding childcare for this baby.  I stayed home with my DD until she started school and then went back to work part-time.  I think I'm in denial that I will be sending this baby somewhere.  :(

  • Ironing and dusting.  I didn't finish the ironing last weekend and I haven't dusted in more than a month.  It's gross.

As far as baby goes...I suppose it wouldn't hurt if I went and purchased a few things now that I'm 25 weeks along, but we haven't done it yet.

Hallelujah, it's a miracle, I have children AND a signature!

I'm actually well adjusted to the name. I already go by it most of the time, which is bad because I have to remember legally I cannot do that yet. I have to take a second to think when I am asked what my name is at doctor's office etc. I hope it's not a big ordeal, and thanks for the encouragement! I would have already done it by now if it was at the same office as the one where we purchased our marriage license. I really think it's asinine that I have to go somewhere else.

  • Seriously, it wakes like a day to make your will.
I'm sorry but that is EXTREMELY important. As important as life insurance IMO. What if (God forbid) you and DH both die tomorrow? Who will take in your LO? Not being snarky but not something I would laugh off.

  • I am a Canadian living in the United Sates and I became eligible to apply for American citizenship back in April. My plan was to take do it pretty much right away, DH is American and we will be living in the States for the foreseeable future, so it just makes sense for me to do it. Then I got pregnant and it fell to the back burner. Plus its kind of expensive to file the paperwork and we now have baby things to spend that money on, etc. .

We've already gone through this process twice. I applied for permanent residency when we first got married, but only got a temporary green card since we were newly weds. To prevent the "marriage for green card and quickie divorce" I guess. After we were married for 2 years, then I could apply for the "permanent" permanent residency, so yay for more paperwork, more filing fees, more fingerprinting (I didn't realize my fingerprints would change from 2 years previous but they seemed to think so), more proving that our marriage is legit and more trips to the, not so local, USCIS office. And now we have the joy of essentially repeating the exact same process for the 3rd time to get citizenship.

Sorry, that unintentionally turned into a slight vent. But that is what I have been putting off. On the bright side...we did have wills drawn up last month!

I think that's what she meant by saying that it's something very important and that she REALLY needs to get it done. I think she could do with a little less judgement. For you, maybe it only took a day to create your will, but it doesn't work that way for everyone. I highly doubt she is "laughing off" her to do list, since it is enough on her mind to make a post about it and to imply someone is doing so is insulting.

And for the record, My H has life insurance, however I do not. If I die tomorrow, I know how horrible it would be for my H. Just because I do not have it yet, does not mean I have no plans to do so, nor do not understand the importance of it.

If I'm out of line here, I'm sorry. It's most likely the hormones right now and very possibly I am seeing this as a whole lot more snarky than it was supposed to be.

  • We haven't done the floor in the baby's room yet and literally NOTHING can get done until we do it. It's just such a PITA to tear out the old floor, seal it, then put in the new and it takes like two weeks because the sealant has to dry for a few days. We have basically 3/4 of our house being refloored in this bamboo and our bedroom and the baby's room are the only ones not done yet. Our bedroom is gigantic (for no apparent reason since we have a smallish house) and I don't know if we will ever get up the courage to tackle that job, especially after the baby comes. I don't even want to think about it.

We've been married 7 years this weekend and I haven't changed my name. I don't think I will. At first I didn't cause it was such a pain, but now I don't really see the point. It's not like it actually matters. At least you like his last name, my DH's is ugly and no one can pronounce it. My last name is nice. I'm sticking with it.

It wasn't that big of a deal here, either.  I went to the social security office mid-week, in the middle of the day and walked right in, answered some questions and was out of there with my new SS card.  Then I went straight over to the DMV where I got lucky and walked in and out in a matter of like 30 min.  Every city is different though.

My procrastination has been our bathroom.  It's a swamp.  Granted, most people would probably think that it is still pretty clean, but it grosses me out right now and I have no desire to clean it.

  • Another one for the will! I wanted to do it this year but didn't figure it made sense when we'd have to change it first thing after our LO came. So that's on the to-do list for first quarter of 2012.

Finding a pediatrician! I had no idea we should be looking yet. I'll probably ask my OB at my next appt, but for now it's weighing on me heavily.

Finding a daycare! I am still undecided on if I'll go back to work, so yet another thing to think of.

We were also going to start a college fund, but figured it would be easiest to just open the 529 after she's born and start contributing... so that waits for first quarter of 2012 as well.

  • We need to write a will as well.....we have everything else in order (life insurance, 529, 401K beneficiaries, IRA beneficiaries, etc.) but that is the last piece of the puzzle we need to do...And get a good filing system at home....I have all our 'important' documents in one area but it's not in a fire proof filing system...makes me nervous..

Annnnd I've been married for 4.5 years & STILL have my social Security card in my maiden name.....have never gotten around to changing it..

  • Will and Life Insurence.  We are working on both but are having some trouble deciding on the 'who gets the baby' portion.  It WILL be done before LO gets here.
