He was pretty estranged from him the last few years but still...it's a parent and I feel awful for him. The funeral is next week in a city almost 2 hrs away from my doc and hospital. I will be 38.5 weeks when we go next Wed/Thur for the funeral and family services. Anyone else have something come up like this so close to due date? Obviously I'm going to talk to my OB and it's a longshot I go into labor then but what do you do? Drive like hell to get to my own hospital or go to one near where I will be staying? Thankfully I will be close to the hospital I delivered at the first time around but I am curious as to what my doc would do...travel up there?

Sorry to hear about your FIL.
I would think you could make it to your own hospital in time. Your Dr. can't come to you b/c they wouldn't have priviledges at that hospital.
Sorry to hear that.
Unless your doctor has privileges at the hospital near where you're going to be, most likely you'll just be assigned a doctor if you end up going in to labor. Definitely talk to your OB to try and put a plan in place in case you do need to go to the hospital.

I would bring the hospital bag, car seat, your OB's phone number as well as the contact info for the local hospital with you in case you go into labor and the labor progresses very quickly (not very common for 1st time moms) - BUT from what I've heard, read, etc, labor takes a lot longer than a few hours unless it is a rare case.
That being said, I would probably start heading home if you begin to feel consistent contractions, so that you don't have to be really uncomfortable on the car ride.
I just had something similar happen to me. My cousin passed away earlier this week and the funeral is set for this Friday. I went to my doctors yesterday to get her opinion and she advised me against going. I will not be attending since it's about 4-5 hours away, but wish I could. The doctor did suggest if I decided to go, to bring my medical records with me just in case I deliver when I am out of town and to make sure the hospital nearby accepted my insurance. I am progressing a lot though. It might be different for you, but when you go, I would definitely recommend getting a copy of your medical records from the doctors to bring with you.
