Ipad owners come in...

I am thinking of getting an Ipad in time for our trip to Asia in Nov. I want to make sure I keep LO entertained during the looong flight. For those who have it, have you found it useful in keeping LO entertained especially when you are traveling? We don't normally have LO watch tv/dvd at home but during the flights we'll make an exception. She can watch all the dvds that she wants! lol.

Also, for those that have one, did you just get the wifi one or the one with the monthly subscription?

TIA!

Re: Ipad owners come in...

  • Have you tested it out with E yet? I don't have an Ipad, but we also don't let A watch much TV and the times when we've tried to resort to it (or videos on the laptop) to keep him entertained, it totally failed! If you have other uses for the Ipad, I think getting it is great, but I'm not sure I'd spend the money primarily for the trip since it's not a guaranteed distraction. I have short videos of things he loves on my Iphone (e.g., the garbage truck going around our neighborhood) that work in a pinch, but even with those, we play them a couple times and then he's wanting to do something else. On planes, we've just given him our phones to mess with and that kept him occupied more than anything. I'm sure every LO is different, but that's just our experience. :)

We haven't tested it out since we don't have an Ipad Stick out tongue. She does love to play with my macbook though..she bangs on the keyboard when she sees me using it. She also likes to play with my cellphone (Android) but she mostly puts it in her mouth :(. Sometimes, she gets ahold of my work bberry and pretends to type something. Hmm maybe I should try to make her watch cartoons on tv and see if it will catch her attention? I am seriously getting scared for our trip Tongue Tied. We were suppose to make a "practice" trip this month but we've been so busy and couldn't find time to get away. This will be E's first trip on the plane and a looong one at that! :(.

  • We have 2 and love them. I use it more than my computer and it's so much easier to travel with than a laptop. I have a bunch of apps for Kaya that can keep her entertained for quite a while. She doesn't watch videos too much but I have them on there and she may watch for 10-15 min before getting bored. But that at least buys me some time! I got her her own headphones, too. I had her practice wearing them at home so she would be ok with them on the plane. I just got wifi because I didn't wanna have the extra expense of the 3G but it's month to month and would be kinda nice to have when you don't have wifi.

  • MH is getting one next week for his birthday (shhhh!)

We also got my mom one last month for her birthday.  We tried out a few apps (shape/color identifying, etc.) for Henry.  He loved it!

I am not getting the 3G one.  I wanted it at first, but I just can't justify yet another data plan every month since we each already have iPhones.

Thanks for all your input! I think I'll go ahead and get one (Wifi not 3G). I also don't want to pay another monthly fee. Let me know which apps you recommend for kids!
