Cat Owners come in!

Our cat (4yrs old) was never declawed. The only thing she scratches on is our cupboards-one in the kitchen and one we have in our back room. It has never bothered me because you can't really see it, but with moving into a new house, I don't want her ripping our new cupboards to shreds. I tried (awhile ago) buying one of those cardboard scratchers that you lie on the floor-she won't touch it. So today I bought one that is sort of tall (when she scratches, she stands up and stretches out tall) and has a combo of carpet and rope.  Just curious-what do cats prefer to scratch-carpet, rope, cardboard? Or is it a "personal preference"? And.....if I can't get her to use the dumb thing, how can I get her to not scratch the cupboards? When she does it, we move her away, but it doesnt help at all.

  • I know cats hate aluminim foil.  So maybe temporarily line the cupboards the cat likes with foil until the habit is broken?

  • My cat loves the rope part of the post. We had to make sure we got one tall enough because she stretches out tall when she scratches. To deter her from the furniture we used Sticky Paws (imagine double sided packaging tape) and it seems to do the trick. Except when dd would rip it off lol. You can also try cat nip spray on the post to attract her to it.
  • My cat loves those cardboard things. Neither of mine have ever liked the tall posts nor do they claw at furniture. I have hard good things about feliway.. its $$$ though. Its supposed to stop vertical scratching and peeing in places thyre not supposed to (my cat does the peeing thing)

  • My crew love the cardboard ones (we have one on an incline too) and rope....dh built a big tower with a tall rope covered part.....they shred it to nothing! I have one who likes wood and has dug at our bed, I had to cover that side with the bed skirt.

I would try spraying her with a water bottle when she starts to scratch the cupboard, have a scratcher near by too....she may just have to break the habit before she finds a new place.

    Yay for no declaw! =)

We tried this when she was younger and she didn't flinch at the water-would just look at you and continue scratching!
