Singulair

Does anyone have a DC on singulair?  Have you noticed any side effects?  DS is supposed to start taking it to help with his seasonal allergies.

Re: Singulair

  • DS has been on it for over a year (plus Flonase and an albuterol inhaler) to help with his allergies (+ asthma that is triggered by allergies), and the only side effect I've really noticed is that it made a HUGE improvement in both his allergies and asthma.  I hate having him on so much stuff, but it has been so worth it in our situation.  My only complaint about the Singulair is that it's so expensive for us even after insurance.

  • My DD is on Singulair and Zrytec daily for severe seasonal allergies.  I hate having her on so much medicine as well, but her allergies kept triggering severe sinus and ear infections with high fevers that would take forever for her to get over.  It is worth it for us. The only side effect I have noticed is she sleeps better!  I give it to her at night before bed.  I agree with pp on the expensive part.  I think it is about $150 a month without insurance and is still expensive with insurance.

It was recommended for my oldest.  I went to Dr. Google for IRL side effect experiences and almost flipped my lid.

Even though the number of kids having severe side effects are low my child is already prone to OCD type behavior and I didn't want to take the chance that he'd have some of the psychological and behavioral issues that I'd read about so we decided to skip it.  Heck... any drug with behavior/psychological side effects kinda gives me pause.

We went the nasal inhaled steroid route (Nasonex) instead and he's doing awesome.

At this young age I preferred something non-systemic and thankfully there was an option that would work for us without being absorbed into his blood stream.

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.

I read about those same side effects which is why I am so worried about it as well!  It was recommended a year ago and we decided against it then. He started Nasonex in March and has been doing well on it, but needs something else in addition. Nasonex alone isn't cutting it.  Clairitin and Zyrtec made him very short tempered. I am torn on what to do...

Have you tried Clarinex or Xyzal?

I'd actually try Clarinex first as it's known to be non-sedating and Xyzal isn't.

Clarinex is still Rx and probably fairly expensive but I think you can get $25 off coupons online.

Another option is to talk with his allergist and see if shots are an option.

Like I said - I'm probably overly paranoid but Singulair scares me.

Well, I am right there with you.  Thank you for those recs. I will takl to the allergist and see if we can go that route first.  I am trying to put off shots if I can, but maybe I shouldn't.  I hate having him on all these meds, but I hate for him to be so miserable too. :( Thank you for your help!!

  • My DS is also on a daily SIngulair (and a $35 co pay per month!)  and we've seen no side affects.  He is also on a 2x a day inhaled steriod. (cortisteriod?)  FloVent.  Then at the 1st sign of a cold, a up to 3x a day nebulizer with 2 graduating strength albuterols as well.

I hate he has so many meds, and while only 2 are daily, we have 4 others on "standby"  I call them Mock 1, Mock 2 and Mock 3 for the levels of how sick he is to move up the list.  lol

BUT, since on the singlulair....he has not had to go to the ER for his asthma!  7 times in 6 months we were there prior to these meds.  SO, for us, it's so far, so good.
