Minnesota Babies

winter maternity leave

I'll be having my first baby in November and plan to be out of work until mid-February.  I'm a little nervous about being on maternity leave during the winter.  What can I do to get out of the house with a baby when it's bitter cold outside?  I don't want to be cooped up inside everyday.  Any suggestions?  TIA!

Re: winter maternity leave

  • I used to go the MOA to walk. They open early and of you get their before noon it's pretty slow. Nordstoms 3rd floor bathrooms are great for nursing or changing diapers.

  • My daughter was born in mid December and I was out on maternity leave for 12 weeks.  I spent A LOT of time walking at the mall of america.  Nordstrom has a great womens lounge on the 3rd floor for feeding and changing.  It was a great way to get out of the house and get moving after baby was born!
  • My oldest was born in December, we spent a lot of time visiting family and mall walking.  I guess that's not really any new info though!
  • I love Nordstrom!  Good to know that MOA is an option for me and baby.

  • My oldest was born on January 2nd. I did a little mall walking myself, but really, I just took it as a good reason to relax, enjoy my maternity leave and my time home with her. My second is a July baby, and a summer maternity lave is HECTIC! I say, enjoy having a good reason to avoid the snow and cold, cuddle up with your new bundle and enjoy some down time :)

  • With my first (September baby), I also did a lot of trips to MOA. This is only good if you can be responsible and not shop, especially for the baby that probably already has more than enough, lol. You could also make some connections with other new moms. I liked doing that because they held me accountable for getting out of the house. You could find out if your school district has ECFE classes that start second semester. If you're planning to breastfeed, connect with a local chaper of LLL. Some hospitals have weekly new parent classes. Or get the number/emails of a few people in your birthing class if you take one. And lastly, just get out there and do something if you are the type that needs to get out of the house every day to avoid cabin fever. Babies are easy to bundle up and transport when they're still in their infant carseat or in a baby carrier, even in the dead of winter. Moms and babies have survived for hundreds of years without malls to walk around.

  • If your city has a community center sometimes it's free, if you're not a member, to walk the inside track (ours is in Chaska). You don't have the shopping temptation there. I did the Eden Prairie mall alot, they have nursing rooms in the bathroom/family area up by the food court. DS was born in Dec. 09, I'm due with DD in Nov. so I'll be checking out the same places again. ECFE class was a good place to get out and meet people. Even just a trip to Target can be nice. GL!
  • Maternity leave goes fast, so I wouldn't be too worried about keeping busy!  You also have the bonus of being off over the holidays, so you can spend extra time planning for that, whether it be shopping, baking, decorating, etc.  You might want to use the tail end of your pregnancy to prep for back to work by making freezer meals, going through your wardrobe, organizing closets and drawers.  Can you tell I'm a project person?  I think if you always have projects to work on you never feel bored.  Plus, it will seriously make the back to work transition a lot easier.  Good luck with your delivery and enjoy your little one!

  • I am due with my first in the beginning of november as well.  I am also worried about this as well as I don't do super well with extended down time/time off without planning activities.  Yes, I realized that much of my time will be decided for me with sleeping, feeding etc, but I agree I may get cabin fever.  PM me if you are interested in meeting up or walking the mall together etc.

This is so true - I think I saw another nursing mother every time I was in there!

I also thought ECFE classes were great.  I took them through the Mpls program and loved having a bit of a new mother support group to look forward to every week.

  • I am due Nov 3rd, and never really thought about hitting up the MOA either - awesome advice! However, I'm a shopaholic so I'm sure I'll get sucked into buying stuff every time I'm there. It helps that the holidays are during my maternity leave too, so it gives me some other events to get excited about (and I LOVE the holidays!). Good advice gals!
