I know a couple of you had mentioned having a nanny in your home and I was wondering how you found them. Through a service, newspaper, friend or family? I was the one that posted on the daycare staff being careless with my daughter's milk allergy and looking at a nanny as an option to discuss with my DH. We also are ready for outside babysitters other than grandparents.
Re: how did you find your nanny?
Craigslist
I went through several different websites and both of my nannies have been found via craigslist. First one was crazy (long story and don't want to scare you) and the second one is amazing / terrific but goes to school full time and when there is an exam, my son comes second. I'm expecting another baby in December and letting her go b/c i can't imagine her taking care of two kids and going to school full time.
Having a nanny is scary to me b/c you only have one person watching your child. But putting our son in DC couldn't happen b/c we both are out of the house at 6 am, and i would be a total mess regarding food allergies.
I'm planning on registering to care.com.. I have heard good things about that site.
Sittercity is also good.. I was registered to it and found some good nannies. and told my co-worker about it and she found her nanny through them.
Do you have room in your home for an au pair? So much cheaper and reliable but they live with you. (something i do not want! i don't like to wear bras at night lol)
There are agencies everywhere but they are ridiculously expensive (thousands of dollars just to find a nanny -eeh!)
my sister and a few of her friends have worked as nannies. They all use care.com and sittercity.com .
If you are searching for a nanny- I'd also look into places that will run a background check/police report for you.
I worked as a nanny for 8 years. 2 of my families found me through a local agency, 1 found me after placing an ad in the local paper (though they both said it was an overwhelming process with 200+ replies to their ad!), and the last one was a word-of-mouth referral from one of the first families.
If you don't have any word of mouth referrals, I would look into an agency. They do the legwork for you to make sure the people you interview are qualified, background checked, CPR certified, etc.
