VBAC

Anyone have a VBAC at home with a CNM?

This is something I want to look into before getting pregnant. I would love to do this.

The only concern I have is that I did have a small placental abruption just before I went into labor with DS.

I don't know if this is something that would keep the midwife as taking me on as a patient?

  • I had a VBAC at home with an ob/gyn.  I don't know if the prior abruption would risk you out of a home birth--it may also depend on what your individual midwife is comfortable with.  Some of the home birth providers in my area are not comfortable doing VBACs and some are, for example.

  • How did you find and OB/GYN to do an at home VBAC??

I agree- this is quite rare (and great)!  In my state, CNM's can be prosecuted for attending home births.  I believe lay midwives can (and practical midwives?) But there are a lot of Amish in this state and I am often seeing the state going after their midwives when something goes wrong.  Really sad.  In those cases, they are attacking their entire way of life.  But I digress. . .

I just lucked out!  There is an ob/gyn here who switched to doing home births after he became fed up with the way local hospitals handled healthy births.  The hospital where he had privileges banned VBAC so he started doing them at home for his clients.

  • I have a CPM, and doing a HBAC.  She has about 30 years of experience (she was my mom's midwife when I was born!), and is amazing.  And she's SO much more knowledgeable of and experienced with natural birth than the CNM I had last time was.

  • My first was a homebirth w/ a CNM and my second was a c-section because I had an 80% placenta abruption in my 3rd trimester (I was not in labor).  We do plan on a HVBAC with my CNM with our 3rd.  The placenta abruption did not rule us out.  HOWEVER, she did insist that I get some blood work done and it was determined that I have the MTHFR thing so there are precautions that I have to undertake in order to remain in her care (supplements, monthly ultrasounds, etc).  She has no issues treating me but she is also clear that because of the MTHFR there is a possibility I could be transfered out.  I would talk with your midwife about testing you- if you have it there's things you need to do prior to getting pregnant again.  Although the odds of a placenta abruption are only 1%, once you have one it goes up to 10% which doesn't sound like a lot but when you were that 1% it seems pretty large to me.  Best of luck to you.
  • i had an hbac with a CPM, not a CNM.

i'm not sure about the qualification you mentioned. you should ask the providers directly.
