ebf:dairy/soy free for 3 weeks and still mucusy stools

I eliminated dairy and soy 3 weeks ago because DS was having blood and mucus in his stools.  I haven't seen any blood for about 2 weeks but the mucus is still there and it doesn't seem to be getting better.  I know it takes a long time to get the dairy and soy out but I'm worried that the mucus won't go away.  My pedi said that he was only worried about the bloody stool and not so much about the mucus or consistency.  We went through all of this with DS1 and I remember the GI saying that some mucus is okay.  Has anyone else heard this?

  • I don't know but I hope your GI is right!  I have been dairy-free for 6 weeks and, like you, we got rid of the blood after about 2.5 weeks, and the mucus has improved, but we still have some.  I really don't want to give up breastfeeding.  My ped DID say that some "crusty, old GI docs" will even say that a little bit of blood is okay if the baby is happy and thriving.

Actually, my pedi said a little bit of blood is ok if the baby is happy and thriving.  He said that if it was every day, it would be a problem, but every once in while is ok.  I don't want to give up breastfeeding either.  I did with my first because I was so worried that I was harming him.  He was on Neocate and everything cleared up.  Then when we started solids the mucus and occasional blood came back.  So, I figure even I did stop breastfeeding now and put him on Neocate, the mucus and blood would return in a few months anyway.  We haven't gone to a GI yet with the baby and I hope we don't have to, but I do remember the GI telling us that some mucus is ok.  I hope they are right too.  My 3 year is fine now.  No allergies or GI issues!!!  That is what makes me not worry as much as when we went through it with him.

  • It took forever for my son's digestive tract to heal from dairy and soy so we saw mucus for a long time (2 months after cutting out both).  Our pedi says some mucus is ok too.
