Armed gunman and my crazy day

OMG, has it been a day.  I teach at a middle school in Cupertino and we've been on lockdown all day because of the armed gunman that STILL hasn't been caught.  We couldn't release the students for brunch (recess) or lunch, and bathroom breaks were on an emergency basis only!  We're all going stir crazy!
Additionally, I did not have a break to pump when I was supposed to, so I was bursting at the seams and had to beg a teacher to take all 33 of my kids so I could have 20 minutes to pump.  Those of you who pump know that stress is not good for successful pumping!
Now we're doing a complicated student release at 3:00 where every single student has to be signed out by their own parent (and these are middle schoolers... a lot of them walk home, ride bikes, etc. and they won't be able to do that because of the possible danger).  So all teachers have to stay until EVERY student has been picked up.  It's likely we'll all be here until 7 or 8pm.  Luckily my daycare provider will keep Baby H until I can get her, no matter what time it is. AND luckily I left some extra frozen breastmilk with her recently... for emergencies...
I can't wait until this day is over!!!

  • Wow!  That sounds scary and miserable.  Hopefully they can resolve this situation very very soon!

  • I was thinking about all you gals down there and wondering if anyone was directly affected by the lockdowns. My Mom got an automated phone call from the Santa Clara Sheriff's department this morning. Other than that she had to miss her morning workout at the senior center because it is in the hot area, but no major inconvenience.

I hope the alerts are all over soon and you can get back to normal. Thank goodness your DCP is available for this evening...that's a huge logistical nightmare averted. I soooo feel your pain on the pumping issue...if the teacher had given you a bad time, just squirt her in the eye. ;)

  • Oh my goodness that's awful.  I'm glad you finally were able to get a teacher to cover you to pump, that would be a horrible situation to be in and then add the rest of it on top of it and that's plain ugly.

That's really great that your daycare provider is flexible enough to stay with little H so that at least you know that you're not going to have some pissed off provider on top of your own stress.  I hope that you get lucky and your students are picked up at a reasonable time.

  • a coworker has his sons in a lockdown school. His kids were supposed to be released at 130, and they just got let go at 330.

Sorry you are stuck in all this.

  • Wow - sorry you are caught up in this mess M.  I know stress is not good for pumping, I hope your supply goes unaffected and you get to go home sooner than too late tonight.
  • UGH - as if this is not a bad enough situation without being a mom of an infant. I'm also a teacher, and lockdowns are the WORST , can't imagine one that lasts this long. :( This makes me realize I should also leave some frozen milk at my parent's and care provider's home, just in case.

I hope you have a glass of wine waiting for you at home.

  • That sounds like a nightmare - I hate lockdowns!  I hope you get to go home soon.

  • I'm home now- we jammed through the student release process at record speed.  When there were still 20 or so students left, the administrators let the teachers go and kept them all in one spot to wait for their parents.

I'm so incredibly exhausted!   We just got word that we'll definitely be open again tomorrow, so I hope we don't have another lockdown situation....
