DS not going to the potty in PS

I recently realized that DS doesn't pee at school.  He's there for about 3 hours.  I did notice that he peed a lot after he got home, but I assumed he drank a lot during snack time.

For some reason, I always thought that they brought this kids in one group at a time and stayed in there with them. (I don't know why I assumed this...I just thought this is always how it's done at daycares/preschool).  I didn't realize they would have to do everything themselves.  DS is on the younger side  for his 3 yo class...he's actually still 2, turning 3 this weekend.  He hasn't actually fully mastered taking his pants off and putting it back on.  he can do it most of the time if the pants are loose enough, but definitely not if there are buttons/zippers.

I think he doesn't go at all because he probably can't take his pants off and he's too shy to ask the teachers for help.  It doesn't seem like he's having accidents since he's in the same clothes when I pick him up, but I hate for him to be uncomfortable.

Is there anything I can do to help him feel more comfortable?  I have tried taking him myself before class starts, but he won't go.

Re: DS not going to the potty in PS

  • Can he do the pants that have elastic waists? Our PS has a "dress for success" policy where zippered/button pants are very strongly discouraged unless the kid has mastered them. The teacher on the first day asked that the boys wear elasticized shorts or pants each day. Or can you talk to the teacher about encouraging him to go and perhaps assisting him during class? I can't believe they would rather him hold it than help him.

  • yes...i've started putting him in sweatpants.  I don't think the teachers realized he wasn't going since the rest of the kids go to the bathroom whenever they need to.

  • Honestly, I'm not even sure how DS gets help or if he gets help. He tells me he goes, but that is all the details I get. I think they can go whenever they need to, but I should probably check that out now that you mention it.

  • DS just started PS and is on the younger side too - her just turned 3 the end of August.  I have pretty absorbant training underwear I put him in and I notice that he is usually a little wet when I pick him up.  His problem is he doesn't like to stop an activity to go potty.  I think the teachers there expect the kids to just go when they have too but my DS never wants to stop playing.  I am hoping he gets better at this - we definitely only do elastic waist pants but even that he isn't great at.  And lets not even talk about pooping....I pray every day he doesn't have to poop at school because then I will be getting a call - since they won't wipe or help him - hands off PS.  And he cannot wipe himself at all....
