butt cream for sensitive hineys...

My LO has super sensitive skin - we cloth diaper not only by choice but because disposables give him a rash pretty quickly.  Now he's in daycare from 8-5 and they're willing to use cloth.  He arrives with no rash, by lunch when my DH goes in and hangs out he's got a rash.  We usually give him a shower and let him air dry when he gets home and the rash gets better pretty quick.  By morning he's rash-free (or nearly so) again.  they use our wipes at daycare but they're using A&D ointment to help with the rash - I'm convinced that may be the culprit (or maybe because he's in a swing with the diaper pushed up against him - is that even possible?!)

so what I need is a suggestion for a cloth friendly, sensitive skin friendly butt cream for them to use.

  • IDK about the cream. Maybe request that they change him more frequently.

  • That is really strange. I would think that if they were changing him enough he wouldn't have a rash. Maybe they are not as familiar with cloth and don't realize he can't sit in a diapers as long?

I love Butt Paste, Liam never has any problems with it.  I bought California Baby and I think it actually stings! booooo.

  • they're changing him almost every hour - usually he's wetting/soiling 7 diapers a day (and with cloth I get to bring them home and verify).  I may try changing which diapers I'm sending (he's got AIO's for daycare, we use pre-folds at home) so maybe it's the diapers themselves (I will experiment a little this weekend)  DH sent pre-folds today and if those work and no rash then yay!

I've never used butt cream before, I'll try Butt Paste though...can't hurt :)

  • I love Triple Paste. But use Butt Paste for on the go. Both have worked well for my boys.

  • We don't use cloth so I don't know about that aspect of things. My DS is/was the same way leave in the am  no rash, by the time he got him ( from Grandmas who watches him daily) he would have a rash.  By the morning rash would be gone again.  We narrowed it down to his diet being a bit to acidic and not being dry enough when the diaper cream was being applied.  We use Aveeno diaper cream.

  • I've found that Bag Balm works really well, especially with sensitive skin. The best price I've found is on Amazon, but they do carry it at Target (behind the pharmacist's counter for some reason), Rite Aid, etc.

  • You can also get Bag Balm at any feed store, etc if you have animals... we used to use it on our horses, lol. I had no idea people used it too.

But seriously, we use the general green balm from this shop and its AWESOME!!

She's on vacation right now, bummer.  But its mostly olive oil and eucalyptus, etc and works great. Maybe have a hunt around etsy for something similar.

I just started using A&D again b/c I couldnt find the jar of the regular stuff, and its been terrible. Her rash stays way longer and it doesnt seem to be helping.

  • We have sensitive hineys here too! Butt paste works great for us! My Grandma swears by bag balm and I keep meaning to pick some up at Costco. I'm not familiar with cloth diapers can you use regular old butt cream with them? I've also heard good things about CJ's BUTTer. Mstie24 and doublem sell it from their shop!

  • There isn't much that is actually cloth friendly. Of those mentioned above, I believe only CJs and Cali Baby are. We use Earth Mama Angel Baby. I have heard good things about Grandma Els. Otherwise, I think your idea to use the same diapers and wipes you use at home is good. I know my DD can't handle wipes. She gets a rash every time I use one. Hope you figure out how to keep him comfy soon. You might need to take an old toothbrush and some Dawn to the ones they used A&D on. You could try liners too, either microfleece or disposable.
  • We CD too! We use pocket diapers at daycare (Sunbabys) and we use CJs BUTTer. Is always clears the rash up quickly. DS doesn't seem to have super sensitive skin so far, but I also use CJs whenever I see even a little red (it smells SO good...). I hope you figure something out soon! My daycare changes every 2 hours (unless he poops) and it hasn't been too bad with rash and they aren't shy about using CJs either.

(I have tried Pink Sugar,Mango(with sugar and mint), and Oatmeal(with honey I think?), and also Love Spell. I like them all so far! I think my favorites are the Mango and the Pink Sugar. Sorry, but I never knew what scents to get so I thought you would like to know what someone has tried so far!

I second this.  We love the Earth Mama Angel Baby cream.  It smells great and seems to both prevent rashes (we leave our guy in a super absorbent cloth pocket diaper at night) and quickly treats any rashes that we have had.  Not all creams are cloth diaper friendly and you may need to strip your cloth diapers that had the other cream on them.  I'd slather your little one in the Earth Mama cream before sending him to daycare and instruct them to use a bit of it with every diaper change.  He may be sensitive to the fiber of the All In Ones too.

  • A&D will lock in moisture.  So if they're not drying his butt well, it will stay wet there.   I'd just ask them to use nothing.

  • we sent pre-folds today and it went a lot better (we only sent a few so once he was back in the AIO's, he got a rash again).

Looks like I need to research striping the AIO's and see if we can save them/use them.  It might be texture related, they're rougher than the pre-folds so that could be it too.  I've got liners on hand so maybe I'll start with that.

  • My parents used Bag Balm and swear by it.  I'm gonna use it with my LO.  Oh, and my sister and I were cloth diapered (using the old fashioned kind w/ pins and plastic pants) and my mom never had to strip the diapers when she used it.  It's nice because it forms a barrier yet wipes off easliy and doesn't smell nasty like some creams/ointments.

As a PP said, you can find it at most stores, although you may need to ask for it at the pharmacy.  It's not very expensive either.

  • I have heard great things about coconut oil for rash cream, and it's CD safe.  I would be careful that what you do use doesn't void your warranty on your diapers (if they are warrantied)

I would also check with the ladies on the CD board.  They are very nice and super helpful!

  • I've been cloth diapering DD since she was 3 months old.  She went through a brief period of terrible rashes (turned out to be an issue with my wash routine) but in that time, I did a ton of research around causes.

First off -- yes, the A&D ointment is NOT cloth friendly.  There are fish oils in that will eventually affect the absorbency of your cloth diapers.  I highly recommend stripping your diapers.

Second -- frequent changes.  Although I think you mentioned that this is happening, but just checking.

Third -- cloth diaper friendly creams.  There are a bunch that are great:

    - California Baby, Earth Mama, CJs Butter Cream, Grandma El's

I personally use coconut oil at EVERY diaper change and it has made a huge difference.  Also, anytime I see a little bit of red, I put on some tea tree oil, wait for that to dry and then put the cloth diaper back on.  That helps a lot too.

And yes, make sure the wipes being used there are similar to what you have at home.  My DD had a bad reaction to the Costco wipes and it turned out she could only use "sensitive" wipes.

  • Hi there!  You probably already know that we CD too, and we were in the same boat since E has a super sensitive bum.  We use CJ's BUTTer and Grandma El's with great results.

FYI: Butt Paste, Triple Paste, and A&D are not CD-friendly, nor is anything with a petroleum base.

Stripping your diapers is really easy - just put them in a hot wash in your laundry with a squirt of blue Dawn dish detergent (a small squirt!).  Then run them through 2 more hot washes (without any detergent) and they should be good to go.

Good luck!  I hope things work out.

Thanks everyone for the advice - I've got a busy weekend ahead!  And hopefully a clear butt for LO next week!

  • I'd also suggest trying the stripped AIOs at home for a day with no cream to see if you get a rash at home too.  Not sure which AIOs you're using, but some kids react to the stay dry liners (many to suedecloth, mine has problems with fleece though which is more unusual) too.
  • We used bag balm for a long time, and really liked it, but then switched over to "Rear Shmear" which you can get at Birth & Beyond in Madison Valley. It's been amazing - we've had no diaper rash at all, we apply it at every change. It's cloth diaper safe, and it isn't petroleum based (which is why we switched away from bag balm). It's expensive, but one tub lasts for months. Good luck!
