Age for gum chewing?

So DH has given DD#1 (3 years old) gum a few times.  She chews it just fine for a while and then forgets about it, goes to eat or drink something and swallows it.  I think she is too young for gum if she is swallowing it (even accidentally).  And I don't see why she needs to chew it anyway...what do others do with gum chewing?

Re: Age for gum chewing?

  • We have given DS gum a couple of times. He usually swallows it when he's done.  I think I was about 7 when I stopped swallowing gum.  It won't hurt him and he doesn't have gum very often so i don't worry about it.  He's always asked for it when he's been around older kids who were chewing it.

  • we haven't given DD any yet (almost 3) but I asked my friend who has older kids; she said her first chewed it at 5 and her 2nd (seeing his older brother and wanting it), at 4.

  • The rule in our house is 5. I think they could handle chewing it before then but I don't trust them not to get it on the rug, furniture or their hair before then.

  • My older kids didn't have it until about 5 and I would have preferred to have waited longer-they found some in my bag and started chewing it.  It was all downhill from there.  At 5 DD#2 was old enough to not swallow it, however, she was not old enough to get rid of it properly.  I found gum in many unexpected places.

Now they're 8 and 6 and I have no problem with gum as a treat every once in a while.

  • We haven't given any to our kids yet, and like you, I don't see why they need it at this age.  I agree that if she's still accidentally swallowing it, she's probably still too young.  I think my DD could handle it now - maybe a half of a piece?  But I've told her it's for when she's older, and she seems fine with that answer.  Maybe when she's six as an occasional treat.  I don't like the idea of adding it into the mix because of DS and #3 potentially throwing a fit over getting some, too, or getting their hands on it and not being able to chew safely.  Also, DH and I only chew minty gum, and I don't think she'd like it.
