Fall & Winter Apparel for Baby in No VA.

Back story:  I do not understand "weather."  I grew up in Northern California (Santa Cruz) and then lived a long time in Southern California.  I've been snowed on 9 times in my life.  I will really miss wearing flip flops in January...

What does my baby need in NO VA for the fall and winter?

    DD was born in early November and spent most of the winter in footed sleepers or pants with long sleeved onsies.  On really cold days, I put a short sleeved onsie underneath.  When we went out, she had a fleece pullover coat and I just covered her with blankets in her infant seat.  This winter, I will probably get her a thicker winter coat since she'll be outside more.

    My DS was born August 4.  When he was a baby I dressed him in layers. He typically wore a ling sleeved onesie, socks, winter weight pants and if it was cold a sweater or fleece.  I'd put him in a snowsuit for a walk in the stroller, but bulky coats can be a safety issue with car seats.  I generally put a sweater and hat on him and several blankets if we went somewhere in the car.

    This area can have a few weeks of extreme cold or snow, but generally the winters are milder then places north of here.

    Last winter I dressed LO in footed sleepers or long-sleeved onesies with pants and socks. He also had a couple of fleece jackets, a hat, and mittens for very cold days. If he was going to be out in the stroller, I'd cover him with a warm blanket. I also got a "Bundle Me" for the infant carseat - it's like a built-in fleece blanket that covers the carseat and keeps babies toasty warm.

    One of the best things we used from the time DS was born in mid-February all the way through early spring was the JJ Cole Car Seat Cover that slips on top of the infant car seat (rather than the Bundle Me which fits inside).

    It was so easy to take on and off for washing or even just when the temps weren't consistently cold, or going in and out of stores, etc.  I also loved that it sort of prevented people from reaching into his seat and touching him when he was really tiny.

    To some extent it depends on your baby. My DD tends to run warm, so I dress her more lightly than I would dress myself for winter.  For her first winter, she wore footed sleepers (no onesies or socks underneath) for the first 4 or 5 months.  When I started dressing her in outfits, she was basically in long sleeve shirts and pants with socks (again, no layers).  She wore a hat outside and a jersey (folded in quarters) receiving blanket to throw over her car seat instead of a coat as long as she was in the bucket carrier.  My parents bought her a fleece bunting kind of outfit that she wore a handful of times for long walks or to check out the snow during the blizzards, but we didn't use it for most outings.

    I second the long sleeved onesie undershirts, footed sleepers, over the carseat cover, and blankets instead of coats. I just want to add that one-pieces (like these) were the easiest for me with DS and I felt like they kept him warmer than a shirt/onesie and pants. I didn't have to worry about matching and I could easily change him with a few snaps. I'm just a fan of them in general on little babies Smile

    Also, I put DS in babylegs at home a lot of the times with a long sleeved onesie. I could also layer them under pants or one-pieces and he would be comfortable. Some people like them, some don't, so maybe just buy one pair to start with.

    I don't know what kind of stroller you have, but we have a citymini & got the rain cover for it.  it was *awesome* for use in the winter.  The cover created a little greenhouse effect in there & Sprout would be kicking off all the blankets I had on him.  If you do a lot of outdoor walking, I recommend.

    Last winter he mostly wore long sleeve onesies, footed fleece PJs, sweat pants and socks.  I had a sweatshirt & a fleece-y jacket for him plus hats...nothing really heavier b/c if he was outdoors it was either in transition to some place warm or in the stroller (which, like I said before, was warm).  now that he's walking, I'll get him a proper winter coat.

    DD was born in December and we spent most of the winter in fleece sleepers with long-sleeved onesies.  I would add a hat, mittens, and blanket when we'd go outside.  For fall last year, she mostly wore fleece jackets and blankets when necessary in the car.

     If I remember correctly, the rule for newborns was dress them in one layer more than you dress yourself.
