Recommend your fav thermometer for LO.

We have the Exergen Temporal Artery https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2267477&fromWidget=BRU%3ACategory%3ATop+Sellers one and I'm not sure how I feel about it's acuracy. It's supposed to be super easy to use but I feel like it's really not because times in the past when she's had a high fever it has given me a much lower reading than the rectal thermometer that we have. What ones do you ladies use? Are the ear ones any good?

  • I truly think the Exergen is the best of the best. I probably bought 10 thermometers, pacifier ones, ear ones, regular ones and none of them were EVER accurate I didn't trust them at all.. plus getting her to sit still to get her temp was impossible. I finally splurged on the exergen maybe a year ago and wondered why I didn't do it from the start. In fact, I think i'm going to start buying it as a baby shower gift for people.

I agree...when R has a fever I will sometimes use rectal as a back up. It is always within a tenth! I was shocked when he ran 104 on the Exergen, sure enough it was actually that high when I used the rectal! I love it! Make sure your batteries are fresh!

  • We have the exergen too and I HATE it!!  I've never been able to get the same reading twice.  I get such different readings that I never know what the heck the temp is.  I'm not sure if you saw my post last week but we had to take Dylan to emergency for a high fever.  Right before we went to the hospital I used the exergen and it had readings of 106 and 107!!!  I then decided to use the rectal thermometer, as I know that is more accurate and it said 105.   He had a 105 temp at the hospital too.  And on the discharge paperwork I got from the hospital it said that they do not recommend the temporal thermometers.  I plan to get one that goes in your ear, as I know I can't use the rectal thermometer much longer.

I have heard the ear ones are horrible, I would do under the arm before I did the ear kind. For oral/under arm just add .8 for your reading. I know my Exergen read funny before I replaced the batteries, but it was spot on during our last virus a few weeks ago. I wonder why they wouldn't recommend them when so many offices use that exact model.....that is odd.

Good luck with whatever you get!

I thought it was odd too!!  I have to take Dylan to the Dr. today for a follow-up.  I should ask them.  They use the temporal one.  The hospital d/c paperwork actually recommended the ear one and the oral one.

  • They used the exergen at the hospital for Natalie too. Her pedi still does rectal though.. and under the arm for Eve.

  • DH is a paramedic and he does not feel that the temporal therm. are at all accurate, so we never bought one.  I still take their temp. rectally.  Hopefully they tolerate this until they can use a conventional oral therm.
