Baby Names

Can you add Jr to any name?

If your child does not have the same exact name as you, can you still add Jr on the birth certificate? I know this seems completely stupid and I do not want to do this but I just wondering if there are laws about it?

  • I don't think there are any laws, but traditionally, you have to have the same name to be a Jr. I would side-eye anyone who used the title without having the same name.

  • I do not think there are any laws about what you can name your baby AT ALL.  You can pretty much put whatever the heck you want on a birth certificate.  Not that you should.

  • I'm pretty sure you can name your kid whatever you want. On Maury once, a woman had a baby with a guy named Sammy Davis Jr (his dad was Sammy Davis). She then named her son Sammy Davis Jr Jr. Apparently she didn't understand the concept.
It was many and many a year ago, In a kingdom by the sea, That a maiden there lived whom you may know By the name of ANNABEL LEE; And this maiden she lived with no other thought Than to love and be loved by me. Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker image BFP: 9/24/11 EDD: 6/5/12 Natural MC: 11/6/11
  • If you're worried, you could just got for "Yunior" as a first name.

  • As others have said- no laws, just tradition. However if you want to call your son Junior you could use it as his middle name: David Junior Smith. My dad's mn is Junior (never went by it.) However he's had to correct some people thinking he is a Jr. such as First J. Last Jr. and he isn't a Jr. so it has its drawbacks.

And you don't have to be a Jr to be a II (second) that's the tradition behind the difference between those two. Say if you wanted to name your son after FIL, your son would be a II (not a Jr!); however if you prefer II over Jr and are naming your son after your husband- that's acceptable.

  • I really don't think there are any lasw about this, you can name your child whatever you want, not that you always should. Jr. at the end of a name is usualy associated with tradition and such. My step father is a jr and his name is exactly like his dads, except with a jr at the end. You can name your child Junior as a first or mn. I personally have only met jrs who had the exact same name as their fathers.

  • John Bob Smith (dad)

Earl Frank Smith Jr (son) Hmm sadly, legally, I think you could...

    There isn't.

If those parents in Jersey could name their kids Adolf Hitler and Aryan Nation, I definitely don't think that it's illegal to throw a Jr. on the end of a name.
