3rd Trimester

Ice

I have been eating ice like crazy lately. I don't know why. But I told someone about it who has had 2 kids and she said she craved it as well and her doctor told her to quit eating it because it was causing contractions and she was 20 weeks (something about it being really cold going down). I'm 38 weeks and 4 days. Have any of you heard of ice bringing on contractions?

Me either I'm definitely going to ask my doctor about that.

  • never heard of that but I've heard craving ice is a sign of anemia.  I know I craved ice a lot more when I was anemic than I do now (hemoglobin is 11.7 and should be >12) so I don't know how much truth there is to that but it was *true* for me and my other pregnant co-worker.

  • I haven't heard of that, but I have heard that craving ice is a form of pica. At least it's not cigarette butts or dirt.

  • Uh oh! Now all these women trying to induce their own labors are going to start chowing down on ice cubes!

  • Never heard of that. I have been eating ice all through my pregnancy and I am ok. The only thing with ice is that can be a sign of anemia, my Dr. check for that and my levels were normal.

  • No Ive never heard that about ice. I have heard it is a sign of anemia like other PP's have said.  If its just because its cold then I dont see the difference in eating ice vs. icecream or a popsicle.

  • Haha I had to comment on this post because I am sitting here EATING ICE! Almost my entire pregnancy I have filled my cups to the brim with ice so that I can eat it after I finish my drink. To corroborate the anemia theory, I am extremely anemic.

I have heard that ice can wake up the baby, but never that it would give you contractions. I'm thinking since I'm 34 weeks tomorrow and have yet to feel so much as a Braxton Hicks contraction, the ice-induced-labor isn't going to be my ticket to L&D.

  • I Have NEVER heard that...people drink cold drinks, that just doesn't seem to make sense to me!  It can be a sign of anemia, but i would say not on the contractions:)
