Hi everyone. I'm not high risk, but I thought you all would be the ones to ask about my situation. I am seeing a midwife at a large practice that includes OBs and midwives. For most of this pregnancy I have had elevated blood pressure, and at my 21 week appointment it even hit that "magical number" of 140/90. The midwife didn't seem too concerned.
About a month later it hit high again so she had me do a 24 hour urine capture. At my follow-up she said I only had 200-some mg (or whatever measure they use) of protein in my urine, so I was in the clear for pre-e because it was under 300.
Fast forward to my appointment this past friday. BP 141/86. Not concerned. I also told her that my swelling in my ankles has stopped going down all the way at night and I still have pitting edema in the mornings. She told me to go buy support hose.
I find her lack of concern, well, concerning. She hasn't even discussed trying to put me on anything to lower my blood pressure. Many of you have dealt with high blood pressure or pre-e in pregnancy... please tell me if I'm just worrying too much, or if you think my midwife should be more concerned.
Re: My midwife doesn't seem worried, but I am... BP
On BP meds since 8 weeks, for 130s/80s with a couple of 140s/90s readings. I'm obese and apparently had high BP prior to my BFP. I'm on 250 mg of Aldomet FOUR times a day. I've been monitored once a week until they felt the medication was at the right dosage and was working well. I am now at a visit once every 3 weeks.
My Dr. is taking this very seriously - even though I have no other side effects (protein in urine, swelling, headaches, "floaters").
I have had Pre-E twice. The last one was severe. I have a BP monitor at home and I also order protein testing strips so I can do it at home.
I would ask for a second opinion. The fact that your swelling doesn't go down anymore is concerning and I have NEVER been told you go buy support hose.
I definitely think your midwife is under reacting. But then again I over react to anything BP related.
I think if you're uncomfortable with your healthcare provider..i would probably find someone new! I wish time and time again that I would have done that with my little girl..Not that that would have prevented the pre eclampsia-but to be just ignored when you have valid points...is irritating!
I am currently 36 w 5 d and have had some pretty consistent not so great BP's (last night 148/88)..the swelling in my feet and ankles hasn't gone down. It sucks. My doctor always tells me to go to labor and delivery (have been there twice) and get checked out..the pre e panel has come back fine--protein fine thus far..but I feel like it's looming in the distance. I have an appt tomorrow and I wish that they would just induce me, but my BP isn't really high enough to do that I guess. The last time it happened with in a matter of hours--good to bad.
Oh and my doctor says that swelling is no longer criteria just an indicator. Whatever that means.
