Food Allergy

Does this sound like my 2nd may have dairy allergy like her brother??

This is my 2nd time around so I should know what's going on...but I'm confused!! My DD is 12 weeks old and for the past few weeks or so her poops have alternated between nothing much at all (maybe a teeny "stain") and mucousy blowouts. They are still yellow-y in color, though sometimes borderline green. No blood visible. But no denying the slimy-ness....and they also often have a somewhat smelly odor. I have had a little cold for the last week, but it's been going on longer than a week so I don't think I can blame that.

Now the thing is, it's probably a no-brainer because my son has a dairy allergy, and I eliminated dairy around 4 months with him because he had mucousy, icky poops, but he had a few that were streaked with blood (but very little, and it never showed when we tested the stool), plus he was covered in eczema, so things were much clearer in his case. He also turned out to have an egg and peanut allergy when he was tested at 9 months. And the milk is a true allergy for him, not just intolerance. He still cannot have it at 21m! :(

I've been told that DD only has about 5-10% greater than normal chance of food allergies from my son's allergist, so that's part of the reason I'm not just automatically jumping to that conclusion. Plus I am selfishly trying to hold onto the hope that it could be something else, because being off dairy for 9 months with my son sucked...I will do it again for sure, but I just don't want to jump the gun if I don't have to.

At her last Dr's visit I mentioned the mucous and said that's how things started with DS, but the doc didn't really seem worried, and she doesn't go back until her 4m visit now.

So basically I'm just wondering at what point you would assume it's dairy and just cut it out on my own? The only other thing I thought of is possibly a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance because she nurses both sides fairly quickly...

She doesn't spit up much (nor did my son), and she isn't terribly gassy. She also sleeps better than he did at night, but often poorly during the day. (just like him) Her skin looks good....even cradle cap is gone, and DS was a mess at this age.

Do you think I should just start cutting it out and see what happens in the next 3-4 weeks? Man, I will miss my morning coffee...never really found a good creamer the last time!

Thanks for reading if you've made it through this whole thing! :)

  • You may be jumping the gun b/c you are looking for it.  Is your baby irritable or unhappy?  When I was nursing my DD, there was no questionning that something was wrong with her.  She had the green stools, rashes on her face after nursing and she was straight out miserable (crying all of the time).  With that said, it doesn't hurt to cut out dairy for a week or so and then slowly add it back in.  That may be easier for you than constantly guessing.

  • My second son had the groos poops and started with the eczema at 1 month.  I've been dairy and egg free since then and he sees the allergist in 2 more weeks for his first round of tests.  He still has some GI issues and some eczema- although it doesn't seem to be bothering him so until we see what the allergy tests come back with I haven't cut any other foods.

With your family history- I'd cut dairy for 2+ weeks and see what happens.  Try the coconut milk creamer (silk brand)- it's the best sub I've found for milk in my coffee.

  • i agree with pp, i would cut out dairy/soy for 2 weeks and see how she reacts and then put it back into your diet. BM is the best tester for this.

You may be jumping the gun, but doing a test for 2 weeks shouldn't be too bad. Both of their reactions aren't going to be exactly the same, so i wouldn't compare too much.  Hopefully she can tolerate it and it was something different.

  • Your situation sounds similar to mine.  DS1 started to have mucusy/bloody stools around 8 weeks.  We put him on Neocate and it helped.  With DS2 the mucus started around 8 weeks too and then the blood showed a few weeks later.  The blood and mucus were the ONLY symptoms either of them had.  I am committed to breastfeeding and eliminating foods from my diet with this baby.  It's been about 3 weeks and the blood isgone but the mucus is still there:(  I'm hoping it clears up soon.  Good luck!
