Pregnant after 35

Anyone have an Amniocentesis?

I'm 38 years old and 17 weeks pregnant. I have to schedule my amnio soon. I was hoping to get first hand opinions on what it was like to get it done. Is it painful, what happens with the baby, etc...? I'm so nervous and just need reassurance and someone to talk to who has been through it.

Thanks!

Re: Anyone have an Amniocentesis?

  • I didn't have an amnio but I did have a CVS at 10/11 weeks and it was very similar. They first checked the baby's position on ultrasound to verify the location of the placenta (that's what they're testing on a CVS; for an amnio, they're just going for fluid). Then they prepped/sterilized my belly and gave me a shot to numb the area (hurt a little), but then the real needle that came later didn't hurt a bit. I was able to watch the entire thing on ultrasound and then the doc pulled out the needle and that was it. Very little pain. Afterwards, they told me to take it easy and no heavy lifting for a few days. I felt completely fine, no cramping, no spotting, no nothing.

I was pleasantly surprised how easy it was. Good luck!

  • Great, thanks! You help put my mind at ease. I hope I have a good experience also!
  • Hi I had an amnio with my daughter. There is almost no pain when the needle goes in and out.

I did have a contraction but the doctor said that is pretty rare. I would suggest not looking at the needle and maybe just watch the monitor. That way you are sure the needle did not go near the baby.

I had to take it easy for a few days afterward. But it was so great when the results came back. I would definitely do it again. Good luck!

  • Hi Jan312.  I had a CVS done in September and an Amnio done on 10/10/11.  I have to say neither procedure was bad.  I won't go into detail with the CVS but for the amnio I went and they did an ultrasound (pretty in depth) to see where the baby was, where the placenta was, etc.  Then they cleaned my belly with cleaning solution.  I didn't look at the needle but you really only felt it pinch when it poked through the skin.  After that you just felt a little pressure.  The amnio itself was less then 5 minutes. I was on bed rest the rest of that day and I took the following day off.  I was very bloated feeling with mild (menstrual) like cramping the night of the amnio but was fine the next day.  I opted to get FISH results which I had within 48 hours and I'm still waiting for the final results.  I should here any day now.  It really was not painful at all and the baby was perfectly fine.  The keep the ultrasound on you the entire time to monitor the baby.  Then afterwards they check the babies heart rate.  I really don't think you have anything to worry about.  I know I'm responding to this post very late...did you have the amnio??  What did you think??
  • Hi Ladies, thanks for the info. I am going in this Friday for genetic counseling followed by and amnio. I am nervous about the amnio, but feel confident all will be ok. Thanks for the reassurance...definitely helped put me at ease. I'll let you know how it goes! Thanks.
  • I'm 34 and 18 weeks pregnant and just had my amnio and it was BAD! It hurt like hell the whole time and still hurts. Both at the entry point and my abdomen. Honestly, I think if I had it to do again I probably wouldn't do it. Mainly b/c I truly do not believe anything is wrong to begin with. But I prefer to err on the side of caution. I will say that I won't do again unless it is recommended by my Doc. :)
Pregnant again!! Thought it would never happen after we lost our last one but it has!! YAY!!
