For many families, September signals the start of the school year, and learning the letters of the alphabet. Gold stars are awarded to names that are creatively spelled, including Aiden/Ayden/Aden/Aaden, Braden, Caden, Jaden, and Zaden.

Names inspired by wordplay?including acronyms and anagrams?make the lesson plan. Exotic examples include Ily (short for "I love you") and Abcde?the first five letters of the alphabet (pronounced "Ab-si-dee").

Um, forget Nevaeh - Abcde is my new favorite!

  • When I was searching for a middle name for DD and plugging in 3-syllable options, Abcde came up and I laughed for about 2 days straight.

I can't wait for the SSN results to come out to see if anyone actually uses it or if it is an urban legend like La-a (Ladasha)...

LOL La-a = Ladasha, wow!  Never heard of that one before.  Is that really just an urban legend?  Surprised people don't actually try to use that...

  • I remember seeing Abcde listed in the babynames.com index a while back. That's really terrible.

  • What exactly are people thinking when they name their children? I feel like with the amount of people naming their kids crazy things with crazy spellings and crazy pronunciations, it's ruining it for the rest of us normal folks who name their babies regular names. I mean, people think that Ian's name is pronounced "eye-un" instead of "ee-in." Really people?

  • My personal favorite IRL is a guy I worked with who named his little girl "Pinksit Trouble" and if she was a boy she would have been "Pinksit Danger".

    Um yah. . .

  • A guy on my offshore team is named Dikshit.  It really amusing when some other people on my (onshore) team try to make up a pronounciation when they're talking on a conference call and are looking for him....they try to use stuff like 'dishyt' or something, until the guy clarified it one day and said it was dik-*** just like it's written.

  • I read the same article this morning.  Barf.

  • DH works in supply for the Ohio National Guard so sees all the soldier's names when they need things.  He's had a La-a.

My BFF worked in a daycare where they had a Diarrhea, pronounced dar-e-ah. I think she had several other bad ones, but I can't remember them.

It makes me sad that parents so these things to their children.  I always hope the first 18 years of their lives go fast so they can get to 18 and legally change their name if they want.
