Trying to Get Pregnant

Update on my pup (NTTGP and sad)

I wrote about my pup who was vomiting over the last 24 hours. I brought him to the vet ... and unfortunately I didn't get to bring him home. He had a pancreas disease, which I don't remember the name of. They wanted to do 48 hours of constant fluid. My vet doesn't do overnight, and we were going to bring  him home and then bring him back tomorrow. I called to find out how much it was going to cost as an estimate, and I was told that he wasn't allowed to go home because he had an IV in his jugular vein. Every play I could transfer him to was going to cost more than $1500, and there was no payment plan available.

I spoke to the vet and we went over the options, but there really weren't many. I could figure out how to pay for the transfer, etc, which would have been exceedingly difficult, especially since I just lost my job. The vet said that I could do that, but it would probably come  back, and he still had all his back issues that would never go away and would only become worse.

It was time to make the decision to put him down ... he was 8 1/2.  I will miss my little buddy.

  • sorry to hear that. :(  My family dog had pancreas issues and I had to give her a shot every day. It was so painful for her and not fun for me. She didn't live to long after that. I am sure you made the right decision.

  • Made me cry.  :(  My thoughts are with you tonight.  I'm so sorry.
  • Oh, I am sooo sorry. As a mommy to 3 dogs, I feel your pain.

Charlie, my mini daschund, has chronic pancreatitis. He has vomiting, bloody diarrhea, and fevers with it. I wonder if that's what your baby had? Charlie's treatment is about $800 per episode, and he is only 2 with no other health problems. They tell us that as he gets older, it could become more of a problem. He is also on special diet, which is about $50 per month. AT some point in his life, I know we will have to make some hard decisions as well.

I just wish vets could be more liberal with payment plans and such. My BIL is a vet, and he says that they just can't do it. ::Sigh:: But it also sounds like your guy had other problems, like his back.

It is sooo hard, but your decision was the right one for your little guy.

That was what she said. He hadn't gotten the fever or the diarrhea, but he was drinking an entire bowl of water and then couldn't keep it down for more than 10 minutes. They had filled it when they left at 10:30 am 3/4 of the way (a LARGE bowl..) and it was bone dry 2 hours later when I got there, but 5 different places he had been sick throughout the house. He was so dehydrated he couldn't even bear his own weight.

  • I am so sorry to hear about your dog. It is so incredibly hard to lose a pet, as they are such a part of the family. Find comfort in the fact that he knew how much you loved him and how well you took care of him. Hugs to you.

He was so dehydrated he couldn't even bear his own weight.

The first time Charlie had an episode, he was crated during the day. I came home after 8 hours of work and there were 8 piles of vomit in his crate, plus he had had diarrhea through the slats into the crate onto the floor a few times. He was only 8 pounds at the time, and he was massively dehydrated. He was limp as a rag doll. I rushed him to the vet and his pancreas enzyme levels were sky-high.

I rescued Charlie from a coworker who couldn't take care of him. Now that I look back, she probably couldn't afford his vet bills. She never disclosed to me that he was so sick.
