Babies: 3 - 6 Months

introducing solids help/question

DH threw away the papers.

how many days to give a food before trying another one?

At what age did your pedi suggest feeding 2x a day?

Currently we are doing 1/2 jar of veggies and about an hour later he goes to bed with a 4-6oz bottle mixed with rice.

Re: introducing solids help/question

  • My pedi said to start with rice cereal once a day at 4 months and to move to two meals a day at 5 months. Rice cereal in the morning and a veggie in the evening.

I'm not completely following that advice. I started doing 2 meals a day a few days ago and I actually mix half rice cereal with half veggie at both meals.

  • 1.  If the rice isn't for reflux issues then at that age, it shouldn't go in the bottle anymore, just on the spoon.

    2.  Norm is one food every 4 days, but we didn't really follow that.  We probably waited 2 days.  Also, don't give a new food right before bed so you can keep an eye on LO to watch for an allergic reactions.

    3.  Up to you when to move to two meals a day, no rush.  I'd wait until he's eating a variety of things just to spice it up a bit for him though.

  • We started feeding him once a day with bananas, and fed him that way for a week. Our Pedi didnt even give us a guidline, I looked it up online, but we went to two meals a day after the first week. LO eats 2 times a day, about 3 ounces each time. We made sure he ate the same food for about 3-4 days before trying another, (Peaches gave him massive diarrhea the second day) and now that he has had a few we do a fruit in the morning and a veggi for dinner. We have never done rice, so I dont know how that would affect the other foods. As long as your LO is happy I think you are doing just fine! :)

  • 1. 3-4 days in between to be sure LO is not allergic. 2. I know every pedi is different, but here's what we were told. At 4 months, start with rice cereal 2x a day for 2 weeks, then if we want to do oatmeal 2x a day for the next 2 weeks or continue with rice cereal unless DS is constipated. At 5 months we can start veggies first, then fruits continuing with 2 meals a day; cereal for breakfast then a veggie/fruit for lunch. Then at 6 months we can move to 3 meals a day and also start introducing meats. I agree with PP about the rice in the bottle, unless it's for reflux, spoon feed it. All it does in a bottle is add calories they don't need. Sorry for format, I'm on my phone. HTH!

  • Just like the PP said, all pedis are different.  BUT I can tell you what we were told.

H's doc said there is no value to giving the cereals.  He did suggest we 'spoon train' with them though.  As soon as Huds could eat from a spoon he told us to switch to a veggie.  He said we should feed for 3-4 days before introducing a new veggie.  He SUGGESTED doing veggies first and then experiment with fruits.  He also SUGGESTED one meal a day 4-6 months, 2 meals 6-9 months and 3 meals at 9months+ unless our lil guy was telling us different.
