Trying to Get Pregnant

Interview and TTC.. teachers??

Hello All

I have been looking for a teaching job for the past 3 years and have been unsuccessful.. I have been making ends meet with nannying.  However I just landed an interview for a maternity leave Nov-June.

I am nervous as if I do get pregnant throughout the school year how that would look upon me? I do not want to hold off trying if I do land this teaching position.

 Thoughts concerns

  • It would be illegal for them to discriminate against you because you are (or may be) pregnant.

  • You don't even have the job yet.

You can't plan your life around the "what ifs" of life.  Worry about getting the job first.  If you got pregnant this cycle, you'd have a July due date.

    Prove that they did.

  • You should definitely go for it if you want the job. If you're not pregnant now, then you wouldn't have the baby until after school got out anyways.  You can still teach pregnant!  This could be a good way to get 'in' to a school.  How long have you been TTC?

  • I teach kindergarten and teachers as a whole are supportive towards expectant mothers.  Also, the teacher that you would be covering for will be very pregnant by the time she goes out on maternity leave, so the kids won't really notice anything different.  GL and I hope you get the job, I know how scarce teaching jobs are!

  • I would take it and not worry about getting pregnant. If you get pregnant this cycle your EDD would be June or July right? So there shouldn't be a huge issue with your Nov-June placement. And a foot in the door is a foot in the door, even if you do get pregnant.

This is going to be my 4th cycle TTC after a loss in June @ 6 weeks.. a chemical pregnancy I think is what my OBGYN called it..

  • Good luck to you! I am also a teacher and have had this discussion with my husband. We decided we can't let a job dictate how and when we start a family. I also know that at the school I used to work at a woman was hired to start in September, and was due in November. She was clearly pregnant when she interviewed. Just focus on how excited you are to teach and all the great skills you have!

  • It is illegal to discriminate based upon pregnancy or suspected pregnancy. Our district hired a High School gym teacher that was pregnant and she missed the entire first half of her first year.

    No biggie :)

It is totally illegal.  However, you'd have a next to impossible time proving it if you didn't get a job.

  • If you've been waiting for the opportunity, go for it. You may not even get the job, but at least you would have tried.
