Big Kid Bed ? Fail!!!
Night #1 in my son?s full size bed. We went with a bed that has a height adjustment feature. I really like the bed and we put it on the lowest setting for my son to make sure it was not too high. Unfortunately my bed guard rails do not fit in the frame when it is at the lowest setting because the mattress is essentially sitting inside the frame. We went without the rails and no surprise, my son rolled right out the bed in the middle of the night and face planted but he was dead asleep so we had no clue until we found him face down on the carpet in the morning! I also noticed that my son does not like to sleep under the covers at all and really tosses and turns a lot so I am concerned because he wears those sleep sacks with the walking feet but will outgrow them soon and winter is coming.
Please share your tips for successful bed transitioning:
Did you use the rails or did you just use pillows on the floor?
Did your little one use a blanket? Pillows?
Did you start a new night time ritual around bedtime?
Re: Big Kid Bed ? Fail!!!
We transitioned to a toddler bed (made from the old crib), so we haven't had the issue of him falling out since it has the built in rail. However, I've read several places of people just putting pillows around the bed for their DC to land on.
I decided to try getting him to use a blanket, though I have seen sleep sack with foot holes. I put the blanket on him at night and tell him if he gets cold to put the blanket on top, and explain it a bunch. After a few nights I had him show mommy how he can put the blanket on top, and he did! He also has a pillow, but he doesn't really use it.
We use the same bedtime routine: bath, books, song, bed. We started telling him that big boys stay in their bed at night, and when they wake up in the middle of the night (he was getting up 2-3 times per night!), they roll over and try to go back to sleep. It's helped a lot, I think. HTH! GL
how old is your son? we moved DD at 16 months to a toddler bed. Honestly its bc I'm preg. and I couldn't safely lay her in the crib anmore with my big belly! But what we did was convert the crib to a toddler bed and it's maybe 1 ft off the ground with no side rail but 3 of the sides still have the crib slats, so only one side is wide open. When I converted it she was in the room with me (maybe took 1 hr) and the whole time I told her how its a big girl bed and she's a big gir yada yada... The first night I put her favorite sheets on it. We did our normal routine, book, prayers and kisses, then I asked her "where is your big girl bed?" and she touche dthe mattress and I told her big girls sleep in their big girl beds until mommy comes to get them in the morning. Sure enough she fell out! and spent the night sleeping on the floor. I didn't move her and in the am we made a big fuss about how she stayed in her bed (when we woke up you could see she was like WTF I'm on the floor!) but then we did the same thing night after night and she never fell out again. She does not have blankets or a pillow but she does have a hard book and a stuffed animal in there.
Great suggestions! My son is 18 months and he is super tall and was climbing out of his crib so it was time to transition. The good news is that DH was able to get the crib rails up last night and it made all of the difference. We just have to work on the routine part because my son has gotten used to me falling asleep with him in the bed and I cannot keep that up.
