Shelf above crib?

Hey ladies!

My MIL made the cutest fabric blocks that match the nursery to spell out Dominic's name.  I was originally going to do the wooden letters above his crib, but now that I have these blocks, I was thinking of putting a shelf above the crib and putting the blocks there.

So, my question is...is it a bad (safety-wise) to put a lightweight shelf above the crib?

Re: Shelf above crib?

  • I personally would freak out about it, but that's me. DH and I wouldn't even hang wooden letters for LO's name above the crib because we were scared they'd fall.  My sister had a shelf at the head of my niece's crib and one morning (when she wasn't in the crib) the shelf fell and her piggy bank shattered along with everything else falling and landing the crib.

  • I live in CA and I wouldn't hang anything at all above the crib because earthquakes are a very real possibility here. we did wall stickies.

I don't know. If you live somewhere that doesn't have that risk, maybe it's fine? Make sure you go into a stud when you're hanging it though, and not just into the drywall.

I don't know. makes me nervous.

  • Honestly, I wouldn't. I have a close friend who has a 15 month old daughter. She hung things above the crib and this child will now stand up in her crib and pull on whatever is hung on the wall. There was also something hung above their changing table and whenever my friend is changing her, she also pulls those items down. I'd be terrified the baby will do this when he or she gets old enough and make it fall down on top of  them.

  • I'd probably avoid a shelf. We have always had letters above the crib but those are very lightweight and have always been too high to reach. They have never come down. We had a shelf above the changing table and DD would grab for things occasionally but it wasn't really a safety issue either because I was always right there.

  • I'm paranoid about anything over the crib, including shelves. I wouldn't do a picture, or wood letters or anything at all that could fall.

  • You could try over a dresser or changing table.  I also had a friend hang colorful christmas ornaments (to look like bubbles) from the ceiling all over the room.  They used fishing wire and it's so high an adult could walk under them no problem.  They hung down about a foot or so.

  • Thanks ladies!  We have decided against putting it above the crib.

  • We chose not to hang anything above the crib, including wall letters. Instead we're putting our wall decal above the crib, the mobile I made above the changing table, and the shelf above the toy chest.
  • I wouldn't, but I do tend to overly worry.  I've already been freaking out about the mobile being over the crib and possibly falling in the middle of the night.

  • I wouldn't do it, but I didn't put wooden letters above his crib either. I put DS's wooden name letters above the changing table because I was worried about them falling on him.... no way I'd put a shelf up.

  • We did one above our DD's crib and never had any issue.  It was acutally a quilt rack and my DH installed in using the back brackets and then also did additional screws on the front side that the quilt covers.  It also has a slit on the top that the name letters sits in so it was really safe.  My DH even held his whole body weight from the shelf after installing it to test it out.  Over 5 years later the shelf hasn't budged one bit.  Here is a pic.

I have a picture of what I was taking about.
