Babies: 3 - 6 Months

HELP! DD wont eat cereal.

Pedi said that we should start on cereal. She starts out by spitting it out. Then she starts to eat it for a few minutes but then she starts screaming. What is going on????

Re: HELP! DD wont eat cereal.

  • When we introduced it to DS, we first added it to his bottles as a thickener. He's not a big fan of just plain cereal so a month or so later we mixed with with apple baby food (for the added sweetness) which was a hugeeee hit! Now that he's 5 months, we'll add other flavored baby foods to it and he hasn't rejected it since.

     Best of luck!

  • I tried that and she did eat it, but was very slow...when I told the pedi about it he laughed at me and said absolutely not!. UGH! :( Do you think it is too early to mix it with apple baby food now? She is just over four months.
  • So don't feed her cereal. There's no need to start solids so early. Put them away, try again in a few weeks... or months.

This.  She is not ready.  DS won't be getting solids until he is at least 6 months and this was our Pedi's. recommendation.  Why the rush?

  • We started him on the cereal bottles when he was three months old, yes a month earlier then recommended, but his pediatrician said it was fine. Now he's five months old and eating cereal mixed with apples, carrots, peas, pears and squash. We determined he was ready for other foods (like the apples) when he was no longer wobbly and very, very interested in what we were eating. It's worth a shot to try, but I would ask your pediatrician first.

Yes, your LO is probably not ready.  I feed DD cereal and she loves it, but DS did not really like it or want it until 5 1/2 months.  They don't have to have it right at 4 months... you really don't even have to feed them cereal if you don't want to and just wait until your LO is older and move to different solids.

I agree she probably isnt quite ready since she's spitting it out. Try it mixed with a bottle for a bit. I'm on the fence about starting solids right now my DD is starting to look at food but is very content on just nursing so far. I figure in a few weeks I'll try?? I'm not rushing it... plus then you have to deal with really smelly number 2s. LOL.

  • I wouldn't mix it in a bottle. She is clearly not ready and it's OK to not listen to everything your pedi suggests. Cereal has no nutritional value anyway, it's just for practice.

Put it away and in a few weeks try it again. :)

I agree!  Try again in a month and no need to put it in a bottle.  We do fruits and veggies and no cereal here.

SO you skipped cereal all together?

  • I skipped cereal and started with banana, followed by avocado, sweet potatoes, green beans and apples.  I did start homemade oatmeal mixed with one of the above a few weeks after introducing solids.  She has loved everything except the green beans.  :-)
