Parenting after 35

Ah, those moments...

Ok, I admit I had no idea how heartbreaking can be when your baby is crying and there is not much you can do about it. Today he got his 2 month shots (we were a little late). He was all happy and smiling and talking to the personal in the pedi's office..and then the needles came. 3 pokes! He started screaming and I felt like I was falling apart. Now he is either sleeping or he is looking extremely sad:( He wants to be held when awake, otherwise he cries. That is so not like him. And yes, no work for me today.

I know I should get ready for many more moments like this to come, but I wonder if it ever gets easier.

Re: Ah, those moments...

  • For me any hurts that Teagan has are always hard, but I have to say that the 2 month shots were just awful :(  It was like her first introduction to the cruel world and it broke my heart.  Just give little man lots of extra snuggles today and he'll probably feel good as new in a day or two.  Sometimes, depending on what shots she had (we did the delayed schedule) she would be a little off for a day or two and sometimes ran a low grade fever.  But she always bounced back, and I'm happy to report at her 2 year appt. she didn't even cry when she got her shots!  It gets better.  Hugs, mama.

  • Oh I remember the 2 month shots.  That was so awful.  I remember my DS face as he got the shots.  I hated hearing him cry.  I agree it does get better.  he usually felt better the next day.  I am dreading taking out newborn in for his 2 month appointment.  ughh....

  • I wish I could say it got easier for me but never did.  SO and I were in the doctor's office like, you hold him, no you do it.  Finally the nurse said somebody has to hold his arms.  HOW AWFUL! So I held his arms and SO held his legs and the cry was horrible.  I held him as soon as she was finished.

This wasn't the first time I cried at the doc appts. When DS3 was born, the 1st 5 days of his life he had to get blood work. The 5th day I was done and told the nurse we weren't coming back and I stormed out of there.  He still has the scars on his little feet...

  • Aww, I, too remember the 2 month shots and DS just whimpered in his sleep for hours afterwards. It was heartbreaking.  But on another note, OMG your little guy with his Sophie is so stinking cute in your siggy picture.

It is really no fun.  DD1 had jaundice, so she had tons of little heel pricks for blood.  It was awful!

    DD1 is 3, DD2 is 1.

  • Shots are never fun.  But the bonus of getting older is that the kids understand and respond to bribery more ('you can have this chocolate for being brave!').  Try warm baths to help the soreness too.  Poor baby.

  • As PP have said, lots of snuggling is important.

Also, he is one of the prettiest babies (next to mine) that I have seen

I still get emotional looking at his feet.  One thing I've learned with the shots was to give Tylenol as soon as we got home.
