Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Does LO open mouth for the spoon?

Does your baby actually "eat/take" the babyfood off the spoon?

My little girl just can't do this. She is almost 7 months now and has been "eating" babyfood and cereal since 4 months. She does not open her mouth for anything. Sometimes she will suck food off a spoon - but that is it.

She is growing and gaining just fine.

Am I the only one?

Re: Does LO open mouth for the spoon?

  • you are not alone. my DD is 8 1/2 months and she just within the last week started opening her mouth for the spoon. Up until then she would just sort of suck food off the spoon too.

  • Wish I could help. Mine opens like a baby bird. Maybe see if your pedi has some suggestions.

  • DD does open her mouth and wide. If I am not quick enough she will start to fuss with her mouth open.

  • Jules would not open her mouth for the longest time, she just was not real interested in food so I would wait a few days and try again. She really just started(last 2ish weeks) eating one meal (dinner) everyday and finally opens her mouth wide. But only for veggies, she hates fruit.

  • I have the opposite issue. My baby doesn't close his mouth. He sits like a baby bird with it hanging open, and I can't shovel fast enough.

I wouldn't worry about it. She's growing and gaining, so she's fine. She'll get it. Some kids are slower on solids than others (my daughter was).

  • Sometimes my LO does and other times she doesn't.  I guess it depends on how much she likes the puree and how hungry she is.  Have you tried any type of finger food yet, like puffs broken in half or Baby MumMums?  I just started these this week, more for fun and practice than anything.  She doesn't necessarily like them, but she has fun picking them up and trying to get them to her mouth.  I dont know if this would help w spoon feeding or not, but thats where we are at!!

  • My lil piggy started opening his mouth and following MY fork/spoon when I ate starting around 3 mos. My pedi OKd starting solids early and we haven't looked back. Like a pp, I can't shovel it in fast enough. I swear he'd eat a steak if we gave it to him!  For now, sticking to fruits, veggies and cereal!

All kids are different, if your pedi isn't concerned i'm sure it's fine. The important thing is that she's eating and growing. She'll come around when she's ready.

This is mine too, and she gets mad as heck when I am not fast enough.

  • Ha!  Mine will open his mouth but only closes it around the spoon about half the time.  Usually I have to "scrape" the food against his upper gum and then he makes a face, like, "What am I supposed to do with this stuff in my mouth?" before he closes his lips and starts swallowing.  It's kinda funny actually.

They will all learn to eat, don't worry.

  • DS always opens his mouth when he sees a spoon, even if I'm just putting away dishes. He loves to eat!
