Baby Names

what's wrong with STUART?

So far I've met no one IRL who likes this name. As I've said before, my husband and his family have strong Scottish roots and a Scottish last name--it looks great with Stuart. Anyone on here like it? Or, why do you dislike it?

Re: what's wrong with STUART?

  • Hmmm, I guess I kind of like it.  I knew a really cool guy in high school with this name and most people just called him Stu.  I think as a baby or toddler the nn Stewey (not sure on spelling of that!) would be cute!

  • I like it.  Stuart does sound a bit dorky, but a lot of names bring that image to mind.

  • I have a very good friend with the name Stuart and even though it's associated to someone I care a lot about, I'm still not a big fan of the name Stuart primarily due to the nn, Stu.

  • I have no problem with it. My cousin's name is Stuart. It works just fine for him. He was not a dork in high school.

(My family also has strong Scottish roots.)

It is in the running for our son's MN. Interesting to see other's opinions of the name, I didn't realize that so many people disliked it!

  • It remind me of Stewart Little, and MadTv. Also, it does sound like a nerds name, as dumb as that sounds! Ultimatley, it doesnt matter what we think. If you love it, go for it. Otherwise, all of us are just going to ruin the name for you.

I don't like it. When I hear a name, I try to picture a person with it.

Stuart sounds like a dorky kid on the AV team or chess club.

    Its just sounds "blah"

  • I think it's a little fussy. I imagine a preppy kid who's down on his luck. It just seems like someone who would get their ass kicked a lot.
  • I like Stuart.

I don't think it sounds dorky, but none of the Stuarts I have known have been dorks.

The most recent Stu I have known was in my husband's first squadron.  He was one of those "pretty boys" that loved to womanize and was waaaaaay to proud of himself for being a pilot (think 80s Top Gun personality).  So, naturally, his is known lovingly as "Stouche".

But seriously, it is a great name.  I think it sounds very dignified and traditional and isn't over-done.

  • I like it.  Very preppy Southern frat boy.
  • I like Stuart but dislike the nicknames. To me, "preppy" names appear to be en vogue right now, so if that's how people perceive it, I should think that a plus.

  • I like it.  I know one Stuart and he is English.  He does not go by a nickname, just Stuart.
