caring for incision - under flap?

I am having a hard time keeping my incision area dry because of the oh so fun flap of fat hanging over it. I wasn't given any instructions other then 'keep it dry'. I use a hair dryer on low after the shower but don't put anything on it.

Also I seem to be getting a red rash on one side. I am going to call the Dr about it today, but does anyone else have advice for this issue?

  • Hmmm, I've never had this problem.  Are your butterly bandages still on?  I think I took those off after 2 weeks when the incision was closed up well.  I just wiped dry with a towel after a shower and was ok.  You could try putting a pad over it to protect the area until it's fully healed and not causing problems anymore.

  • I haven't had any kind of bandages on it since the night of the surgery. There are just dissolvable stitches inside that you can't even see. I'll try a pad but don't know how it will stay with this fold of fat in the way.

I would buy some butterfly bandages and put them on top.  Then take a long pad of cotton and tape it on top.  Take it off when you shower, dry and put it back on.

  • Have the same problem. For the first few weeks I use a rolled up wash cloth under it, left it there, and still work the mesh panties. After that I just used a piece of gauze. I had a stitch open up so the gauze helped to keep it from getting everywhere. It was red for a few days after my OB swabbed it with alcohol, but after that it was fine.

  • I just dabbed it dry after showers. I never had a problem keeping it dry.

  • I was told after my c-section to put neosporin on it and put the hospital gauzes on it. That's what helped with me to kind of seperate the flap from the incision. Hope this helps.

  • Use a maxi pad, like the ones they give you at the hospital or Always will work just fine.  Tuck it under your belly, then put on underwear.

  • Get a roll of gauze from the drug store and put it over it after you shower and dry it.  Change it out if it seems to get damp/sweaty.

  • I've done this in the past too... before that I tried the wash cloth too.  Either way I felt like they both worked on keeping the area clean and dry.

  • I would take my hair dryer and put it on the low setting, and dry my incision. It always felt damp to me.

  • While I was in the hospital the nurse suggested i take a dry washcloth (cotton) roll it up and place it over the incision under the flap.  It kept it dry and still allowed it to breath.  Worked like a charm!!  I have heard of other ladies use pads.  Whatever works for you!!

  • In the hospital, the nurses had me tuck a pad under the flap to keep it dry under there.  I did the same at home or tucked a clean washcloth under there to keep it dry.  You could even just tuck your shirt up under there if you need to.

  • Go buy some gauze pads (12x12 I think), Unfold them all the way and then fold them back up so they are the same length as your incision and tuck them in. I have the "flap" as well and this is what the dr told me to do. make sure to wash and rinse really well in your shower and then dry with a clean towel (I just used a new dry face cloth everytime), then gauze it.... changing a few times a day. Once it starts to feel dry and a bit sore where the gauze is you don't need it anymore.
