Weight gain :(

I am 9 weeks 3days and I am up 9-10lbs. I will be honest, I haven't been eating healthy this past week due to going out to eat, family get togethers and haven't gone grocery shopping. I feel absolutely disgusting this morning... like a stuffed sausage, bloated, clothes don't fit, boobs super huge. I feel like there is no reason to have this much weight gain this far along. I'm changing it all up today and going back to healthier eating, but I'm afraid my OB is going to be like WTH at my appointment on Friday :( Can anyone relate ? I started the pregnancy 10lbs overweight and just lost 30lbs on weight watchers. I'm afraid of excessive unnecessary weight gain. Help me feel better about this! Sad

Re: Weight gain :(

  • I can totally relate! I've been on WW since January and I've lost 98 lbs thus far. I hadn't gained a pound since February and then the 2nd week after I found out I was pregnant, I gained 2.6! I was so bloated. Just try your best to eat healthy and to keep exercising. I know for me, I've had a problem exercising because I'm afraid it will make me lose the baby. I know this is unrealistic, so I am trying to walk as much as possible. Every little bit will help! I may look into yoga for pregnant ladies :-)

  • That's exactly how I feel with the exercise! I was running before I found out and then when i found out, I stopped running and exercising thinking it's going to harm the baby or make me lose the baby (stories on the internet are not good!) I am still going to ask the OB about it this Friday but now that my energy is starting to come back a little, I plan on walking again. I definitely don't want to compromise all the hard work from weight watchers. I'm okay with a 20-30lb gain but 10lbs in the first 9 weeks is just crazy. I am trying not to beat myself up over it but I know I've been bad. CONGRATS! on your weight loss!! Big Smile My gynecologist said to me 5 months ago "Be careful losing all this weight, it makes you more fertile." Didn't take her very serious and 4 months later I'm pregnant Wink

  • I wouldn't worry too much.  With DS I gained 10 lbs almost immediately and flipped out thinking I was going to gain way too much weight.  I actually levelled off in my second tri and only gained about 30 lbs total.  Just try to eat healthy and don't give in to all your cravings (I think that's where a lot of people get into trouble).

Get your exercise, plenty of water and snack healthy.  You'll be fine.  I'm sure a lot of it right now is still bloat and that can make anyone feel disgusting!  You'll even out somewhere along the way.

  • Don't worry about the numbers too much. And bloat goes away in the second tri, which helps!

As for exercise, there is no reason not to do it (if you feel up to it) unless your doctor has a medical reason that they recommend you not to exercise or run. I ran almost every day throughout my first pregnancy, including the day I gave birth. I was even at risk for an incompetent cervix, but the doctor said as long as my cervix stayed closed, I could keep running. A study last summer showed that babies whose mamas ran during pregnancy had healthier hearts.

  • I hear ya! I think I put on about 5 on my honeymoon, and have put on another 4 since then. Grand total of 9the in 2 months. I really only feel good when I am full, as soon as I get hungry I get nauseas. I am worried about how much weight I am going to have to lose later on :/ I guess the only thing to do is try to watch what I eat when I can and keep track of my weight (not be obsessive ) :) GL, hope it slows down for both of us!

  • Yeah, I'm right there with you. I was told not to exercise until after the 1st trimester, due to a subchorionic hematoma, so I think that's what's really affecting me. Every day I think about how much I wish I could exercise. I really look forward to becoming more active in a few weeks.
  • I haven't even been on the scale yet.  I have gained weight in the last year due to stress and a new job.  I don't even want to know what I currently weigh.  Since I'm only 5'0 tall even 10 lbs is very noticeable.  So I can expect to be a tub.
  • Don't feel bad! I've put on 7 pounds, and I'm only at 9 weeks. It's completely normal, though, but I still hate reading all these stories about women losing weight due to morning sickness. I'm sick 24/7 and still gaining... Oh well. My doc said some gain in the beginning and others more at the end, so no worries. You'll level out soon! And don't be afraid to work out. I haven't been able to because I've been SO sick, but it's okay to and good for you (and baby) which is the most important thing. =)

  • I am right there with you; I am up 9-10 pounds as well and I am 9 weeks. I lost about 30 pounds on WW before I got KU but I am hoping that it will level out. Exercise is hard for me because I am  so sick all the time, but whenever possible I try to go on walks.

  • I was fluctuating between 145-150 before my BFP, but since my BFP I've been at the top of that range at about 149-151, so I don't know exactly how much I've gained, but I do feel like it's due *mostly* to bloat.  I lost about 20 pounds earlier this year, but after my wedding in July I fell off the diet wagon so I'm not pleased about already having gained some weight, but I'm not surprised either.  I think if your body was used to a diet regimen and all of a sudden you are not following it anymore, you are more likely to put a few pounds back on (even if you are barely eating due to m/s).

  • This makes me feel so much better! I'm still going to change my eating habits, but for some reason my gut is just not okay with running again (maybe because that's how I found out I was pregnant? I got super fatigue and out of breath very fast). I will walk though, definitely. It feels good to not be alone. Thank you, Ladies Smile

  • Don't feel bad! There's very little you can do to control your weight gain during pregnancy. I ate healthy and walked lots during my first pregnancy and still ended up going from 146lbs to 191lbs! I'm dead average BMI if that gives you any indication.

Weight gain will happen in spurts and it could also be that you're retaining a lot of water right now since the weight isn't obviously baby at this point, so keep the salt intake down and up your water intake to help with that.

You'll find some healthy stuff that you enjoy to eat and keep going back to your favourites. It'll get easier!

  • I am right with you, even though I don't know exactly how much I weigh (just can't bear to look at the numbers, I'll deal with them later).  What absolutely kills me is that I watch what I eat like a hawk and walk for an hour every night, even though it kills my brain cells and I am so tired I could cry.  But my doctor does not want me doing any other exericise for the time being.  I am absolutely huge all over, including arms and legs (shirt almost ripped at the seams in the arm area this morning) and I just don't get where it's coming from this early.

I was also very overweight for a majority of my life until losing a lot of weight 3 years ago.  I knew pregnancy would come with weight gain but I am taking this a lot harder than I expected to.

  • I wouldn't worry too much, just fyi don't post on some boards asking how much others gained in the 1st tri. Almost everyone says they gained a lb or two or lost weight and the ones who actually gained keep quiet!!

I had m/s daily all the way through labor with my dd. The first tri was the worst, sick all day every day. I even got put in the hospital for it. Yet somehow I gained 10lbs that trimester! But I gained 35 over all so not a crazy amount. I wasn't allowed to work out in the 1st tri (and I didn't through most of my pregnancy, I was too sick) . I only ate what I could stomach (mostly mcdonald's cheeseburgers). And afterwords I lost more weight with WW and got down 20lbs below my pre pg weight. Seeing the pg weight come off helped inspire me to keep going.

Do what you need to to feel good, it will all even out in the end.
