1 year old waking up *way* too early

DD2 (12 months) has always been a good sleeper, but she's been waking up *way* too early the past two-three weeks.  She typically woke between 6:30 and 7.  Now, I can't get her to sleep past 5:30.  Yuck!

I don't remember this issue with DD1, but it's entirely possible I would have blocked something like this out of my mind.

Is this typical and I'm not remembering?

  • What time does she go to bed? I think around 1yo I always had to push my girls bedtime back by about a half an hour bc of waking up earlier in the morning.

  • My DD #1 gets up between 5:30 and 6:00 on the regular.  She's 4.5 yrs old.  It's lovely.  Confused We tried messing with her bedtime -earlier, later - but it doesn't matter - it's like her internal alarm clock goes off and she is UP early, even if she goes to bed late.  Her bed time is 7:30 pm.

  • I remember DS having some sleep disturbances at around 12-13 months old.  It went away after a few weeks, so maybe you're almost done with it?

  • My 14 month old's regular wake-up time is between 5:30-6:30 am. That's just the way he's wired. He goes to bed at 8:30 pm, so not terribly early.

  • DS would prefer a 5 am wakeup time too, but at his 1 year mark we did modified CIO with a light timer to train him to wake up later. We copied this method from maybeachbride - hi if you're reading. Use a lamp that has a dim light, like a night light, on a timer. The timer should be set for 11 hours after bedtime at that age. You incorporate the lamp timer into the bedtime routine, making a big deal to reinforce that when the lamp is off, it's time to sleep. You also make a big deal in the morning that when the lamp is on, it's time to play. When DS woke up before the lamp went off, we used Ferber to reinforce that since the lamp off = sleep. It took about a week until he was sleeping past 6 am, and a year later about 6:30 is the average. I'm happy to answer more questions if this sounds like something that you'd like to try. Good luck!

  • I'm going through this right now too!  I mean, it's still dark out, why is he waking up?!?

    I hope it's a phase.
