WWYD re 4YO Christmas present?

I have DS's shopping in the bag as he is very predictable right now.  But DD is a bit more difficult.  She has a play kitchen, dress up clothes and an art easel.  She has a Loving Family dollhouse that she doesn't really play with much (DS plays with it more) but that could be because it's stashed up in her room.  DD doesn't have marked interests beyond drawing/art, some pretend play and princess anything.  For her big gift from Santa, I had been considering a leapster or leap pad.  She's exposed to a leapster at school and keeps wanting to play with her clickstart every now and again.

I took DD to the toy store to see what really piqued her interests.  Key areas she didn't want to leave were dress up, Calico Critters, play kitchen stuff like cash register and play microwave and some of the princess stuff (the sing n glow Rapunzel was the key fascination, probably because she is back into Rapunzel again).  She liked playing a bit with the leapster (there was no leappad to try) but it didn't seem to be her favorite.  I think she would play with it a bit but it's not like she is constantly seeking our iTouch to play or anything.  She'll play with her clickstart when it's on but it's not a "go to" toy.  And also I would be limiting play time with any handheld device.

WWYD?  Have Santa bring her some of the other things instead of something like a leapster/ leap pad or go with the leapster/leap pad?  TIA!

Re: WWYD re 4YO Christmas present?

  • Personally, I'd go with her interests. DD doesn't have anything like a Leapster because I have a problem with giving a gift that the child isn't allowed to play with a lot. I want her presents to be played with all day long, not limited to a half hour a day or whatever.

My DD will be 4.5 at Christmas and her big gifts will be (from us and my parents) Barbie-sized Tinkerbell dolls, toy-sized treehouse for the TInk dolls, an American Girl doll and American Girl doll table.

My DD has a lot of stuff for her little kitchen and plays with all of them a lot. I made her an "ice cream store" for it that she loves - it's a plastic container with a bunch of large pompoms, some ice cream cones (some are from a Playdoh ice cream set, some are silicone snow cone cups and one is a cup shaped like a cone), real ice cream scoops and little bowls. I've even made another one as a gift. I also went to a restaurant supply store and found her some fun stuff for her kitchen - tiny creamers, Parmesan shakers, espresso cups, etc.

    HTH!

  • personally if it was me and I bought my DD a present that was $$$ then she didn't play with it I would be a little upset.  So if I were you I would buy her what she's interested in.

  • My DD will be 4 in February, last year we got her a Mobigo and she loves it. She wasn't very interested in it at the store but loves it. It has games with characters she knows, they're all educational and she definitely gets a lot of use out of it.

We are getting 2 big gifts this year for her - a big girl bike with training wheels and a train table. She also has a play kitchen, princess stuff, etc. At this age interests change so much and they basically want everything they see, so I would use your judgment on what you think she would use and like. You can take her to the store 2 months from now and she may have totally different likes.

  • I would have Santa bring some of the other things, like maybe a few new dress ups and accessories in a fun treasure chest (I have it on good authority that that's what Santa is bringing to our house this year), or a set of play kitchen things that she doesn't have yet like a microwave, ironing board, etc.  Skip the expensive stuff if she isn't into it yet.  They don't know at 4 how much things cost relative to one another, so if she's not that into a leapster, she won't be impressed just because it's a "big" gift, if she'd rather have a Rapunzel wig and a $3 tiara a lot more!
