Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Help! food book for baby a little confused??

This might seem like a dumb post Huh?

My pedi still wants us to do baby food, formula and cereal until his 9 mo appointment then he said we would talk about introducing "finger foods". I notice that a lot of moms on here are really good about what they feed their LO's. For example I see some of you give them: avocado, roasted eggplant, curry's...ect. It's like you make them little baby meals and are not just slopping some jarred baby food on their plate. Is there a baby book out there that is good to read? I'm a first time mom and I'm pretty lost on what to feed DS (when pedi gives me the go) I refuse to be like my BF and feed him fries, chicken strips and tater tots for every meal.

  • Wholesomebabyfood.com   It's what I use to make my baby food.  Goes into finger food also and what age to start what foods.  There are some good books too, but I just stuck with this website because it was so easy.

  • DS eats pretty much what we do and I just try to be sensible about it. He gets fruit with breakfast (usually oatmeal), fruit or veggie with a meat at lunch or sometimes he gets yogurt and a fruit, and then meat or some other protein and a veggie with dinner. If we have pasta, I'll often mix his with a veggie puree instead of tomato sauce. On the nights when DH and I eat crap like Chinese I'll give him some purees or a veggie burger. I'm not anti chicken nuggets and fries, but I definitely will limit them.

  • I could have written this post myself, so you're not alone! Our pedi said the same thing, so we really only did purees until this week after his 9 month appointment, although I did get a little daring and start giving him some puffs a few weeks ago lol

I am using the website PP mentioned, wholesomebabyfood.com, which was a great guide for the purees, too.  There are some recipes for more involved little meals to make, also. I just finished making some healthy mac 'n' cheese for him.

Oliver eats what we eat, and has since the beginning. His favorite foods are pickled veggies, raw red bell pepper, peaches, plums, and pears. He LOVES food and always eats everything we give him! We want him to have a healthy relationship with food so we just make sure it tastes good and is healthy for him instead of being bland overcooked mush. I know I don't want to eat that, either.

Also, we don't give him puffs, Cherios, or those melty things or squirty tubes of foods. We want him to learn about real foods. The look, smells, textures, and tastes of real whole unprocessed food.

what's wrong with cheerios? one of the first things we gave ds was mummums, which are just rice rusks. other than that, we've been blw all the way. he's a great eater and i guess i just don't understand what would be wrong with baked grain products?

I'm curious too. My LO even eats the organic versions of the melts and puffs, the Happy Baby brand recommended by Dr. Sears. To original poster, I second wholesomebabyfood.com. It has been my best free go to site for months now. I also always try to keep in mind a balance of grain, fruit, veg, and we are slowly doing some meats. She eats way healthier than I do on any given day.

  • We let LO eat what we're eating usually. Last night I made dijon fish cakes (think crab cakes), sweet potatoes, and peas. She loved all of it. for breakfast she may eat any combo of the following: oatmeal and fruit, eggs, pancakes, cottage cheese, yogurt with fruit, sausage, and cheerios. She still loves veggie purees, so if I don't have any leftovers from dinner, that is what she eats for lunch. LO is a meat lover, like her daddy. She loves anything with ground meat-meatloaf, turkey loaf, pork meatballs, chicken burgers. She will also eat baked chicken and pork tenderloin. I try to steam chucks of veggies every few days to have on hand- carrots, peas, zucchini, butternut squash, etc.

  • One way that I make sure that DD is getting a balanced diet is by keeping plenty of the steam in the bag veggies on hand.  You can get a wide variety of veggies without any additional seasoning.  She also loves partially frozen fruits.  Dole has a wide variety that doesn't have anything added, and it is very convenient when fresh fruit is out of season.  I just let it thaw for about 20 minutes and cut it up for her.

  • I have always just fed DS a little of what I was eating from 6 months on.  Early on I did purees and cereal, but I introduced more & more "real" food along the way.  I think most pedis are too conservative about this kind of stuff...I think it's insane to not even try to introduce real foods until after 9 months.
