I swear my LO only calms down with hard patting. I know he likes it, but it looks horrible!
We are going OOT in a few days. It is going to require a plane ride and ILs are going to have to babysit him. They thought we were "too rough" with him when they were here. I am terrified of them watching him, because he is going to be a screaming mess and it is the only thing that soothes him.
I know it looks like we are beating him, but he is often swaddled and we CD as well. So, to get the vibrations through all that padding takes some force!
Re: Anyone else have to "pat" their LO really hard?
I am SO happy to hear I'm not the only one beating my LO senseless lol j/k of course
When I burp LO or if he's really upset he likes to be patted SO hard on the back, and everyone says "go easy on him" but it's the only thing that works. I've been trying to instill this in my mom who is going to stay home with LO when I go back to work, the soft loving pats just don't work on my LO. He loooooves the hard pats!
YES! LO looooves to be patted on his back or booty, it calms him and often puts him to sleep. And not light patting but firm patting. I'm also firm with burping and my MIL thinks DH and I do it too hard but the LC's and nurses at the hospital showed us how it should be done to get good efficient burps. MIL will take him from me to burp him after I feed him (which is nice) but she will pat his back like he's a newborn bird or something and he will fuss because he can't get the burp out. I'll take him, pat nice and firm, he'll burp then get this heavenly look on his face like he is all blissed out!
Yeah, obviously we don't do it on a bare back and we CD too so he has alot of padding. I actually patted LO to sleep tonight
Sometimes he likes rocking and shushing and sometimes he likes a few minutes of firm patting.
thanks!! I took a video of him cracking up laughing and cooing while listening to the monkey sounds that it makes when he moves. It is too cute!
Our Family Blog.
Yeah, the NICU nurses showed us how to burp him. Even then, his parents didn't think it was okay.
Glad to hear other babies like to be "beat". LO especially likes his butt patted. It makes him go to sleep. Turning him on his side, facing him inward, and patting his butt hard is the only way to calm him down sometimes.
We'll miss you sweet Debbie Girl (4.21.12) and sweet Cindy Girl (8.9.12)

I beat my baby like my life depends on it.
For real, she's a hard burper and a spitup queen. It's all that works.
My parents tell me to quit beating the baby all of the time.
To add to it she likes to be bounced up and down while patted too...it looks just terrible I'm sure but it's instant happiness.
Yep. DD likes it rough.
She also takes great pleasure out of hitting herself in the face.
Crazy kid.

Yep, my nurses exact words were, "if his cheeks aren't jiggling, you aren't patting him hard enough." Works every time.
