Stay at Home Moms

When did you finally part with your work clothes?

Now that I'm expecting a second baby, I'm realizing the idea of me going back to work is getting further and further.  DH recently said, most likely you won't make enought to put both in a daycare anyway so we're talking like 3 more years of SAH.

I have very expensive work clothes and the way we pinch pennies I doubt I'll ever buy stuff that expensive again so I'm having a lot of trouble parting with it considering I'll get a nothing of what I paid...even at high end consignment. I wear about 20% of what's in my closet now...sad.

I don't know when to actually purge if you are constantly between sizes with 2 babies!!  Any advice?

  • I consigned some and kept a bunch (mostly the suits and things that will still be in style enough if I ever wear it).  I still fit into them, so it seems reasonable to me.  I probably held onto them for about a year.  Really, three years from now you are going to want a different wardrobe.  But if it is all really high end, I'd have trouble parting with it too.

  • Hold on to it.  If you don't want it when it's time to go back to work, then consider getting rid of it.

  • I knew I wasn't going back to work after having DD and I figured that when I did go back the odds of the stuff fitting were slim, not to mention being out of style.  I saved a classic black suit, black A line skirt, black pencil skirt, and 2 pair of pants.  The rest I donated to a charity that helps women dress for job interviews.  It hurt a lot less knowing that they were going to a good cause.

  • I kept all nice suits even though they are currently 2 sizes too small.

I am holding on to all of my suits too. I actually wear a few of them here and there when i am out meeting clients and such. But even if I didn't I would hold on to the suits.

I did pare down some of my closet and donated a nice chunk of dress slacks, blazers, dress shirts to a program that helps women in shelters get jobs.

  • If my work clothes were up to date and expensive, I definitely wouldn't part w/ them!

That being said, though, I did just end up giving a lot away to Goodwill. I had like 3 pairs of gray pants, so I gave away 2 that I just liked "ok" ... and kept the nicer one.

Even though I haven't worn anything dressy in a long, long, long time ....

  • Seriously, just like 2 weeks ago.  I got tired of it taking up space and I figure that if I do go back to work I won't want to (or won't be able to) wear those old clothes anyways.

  • I still haven't gotten rid of my work clothes. I have no idea when I'll return to work even if it's just part-time. I also don't know what size I'll be then but since most of my work clothes are basic suits, I'm sure they'll still be in style whenever I need them.

  • As quickly as I could! I was so happy to get rid of all of those suits. I kept a few pieces, mostly separates and then donated the rest to Dressed For Success. I was told by a consignment store that they wouldn't buy any of the suits because no one wears them anymore..
