Adoption

What to expect now that the application has been received?

Our intial application was received by the adoption agency and we are now awaiting a call from the social worker as to how to proceed. We generally know that the home study process will begin. Do any of you have any advice on what to expect, how to prepare, what we can do now (fingerprints, physicals, etc) while waiting for the social worker and her directions?

Like most people, we want to move this home study process along as quickly as possible, especially since we don't want to get stuck in a holding pattern over the holidays.

Let the advice roll on in! Thanks!!!

  • Congrats!

I'd hold tight until you talk to the SW. Homestudies generally have an expiration date, so I wouldn't do anything too early. And the agency will likely give you the forms you need.

I'd just live life as usual until they call, then get the ball rolling.

As far as what happens next, you'll likely meet with the SW and talk about things you fill out in your autobiography, especially anything they want to discuss in depth. How it worked for us was:

    1. Get to know you session so the SW could become familiar with us. Plus we got all the forms.

    2. 2 meetings with the SW to go over questions, etc. in our autobiography. Simultaneously we filled out our autobiographies and diid our clearances.

    3. One in-home meeting

IMO if you want to keep the ball moving, I'd fill out the clearance forms as soon as you get them, and commit to a date when you'll have the autobiographies done.

    GL!

  • Our timeline was: Informational meeting in May, send in application, wait to be called.  We were called within a week to set up a one-on-one with the intake coordinator.  Then we had to attend a 2-day training on the other side of the state (only offered 4 times a year so we had to wait).  Then we were assigned to our caseworker.  We had three meetings in the office and after the third one we did the paperwork for fingerprints and background checks.  Those should be back any day now.  As soon as our caseworker has those, she'll call and set up the home visit.  We're working on our profile now, and were told to expect to be active early this month!

So at this point, all you can really do is read, read, read up on adoption!  Keep a list of everything you've read; at our agency we earn points for all the meetings we attend, books we read etc. that shows we're educating ourselves (this counts for if/when we need to renew our homestudy).  Good luck!
