I guess I should start by saying, I'm not sure that I want my to name my son something that could possible be the same name as the girl sitting next to him in class someday.
Among the few boys names that my husband and I love, is Sawyer. We've loved it for awhile, but after doing some research I have noticed that some people are naming their girls this. To me it is not one bit feminine. And I personally couldn't picture naming a girl this. What are your opinions? Is this a name that is unisex in your eyes?
I know that this seem to be a new fad--especially naming girls boys name-- example Elliot, Charlie, Carter to name a few.One last name that we really like, but for a girl, is Harper-- do you feel this is a unisex name as well? I see all girl when I see the name Harper, but maybe I'm biased.
Re: Girls names for boys & boys names for girls-Opinions Welcome!
The only person I know named Sawyer is a little boy. I generally think of it as a boys' name, but I do think it has that unisex quality that makes it an appealing choice for a girl (to some people).
Because of Harper Lee, I think most people see Harper as all girl. I like it on a girl. It is definitely a unisex name---it's just not being used on boys right now due to the "revived" popularity of To Kill a Mockingbird (Atticus and Scout are also trendy/hipster choices right now).
If you don't want your son ever coming across a girl with his name don't call him Sawyer.

Our son's name will be Dylan and there are also people naming their girls Dylan, but I don't really care. I think of it as a boys name first.
They way I look at it is, for the most part, the names that I think get completely "switched" to the opposite sex are usually not very popular for one sex and then become popular only because they are used for the opposite sex ie: Peyton, Addison, Quinn (traditionally less popular boy names that have become super popular girl names). Names that are already popular for boys and well known are not nearly as likely to become recognized for being a girls name - Charlie, Dylan, Jo, Cater, Elliot, Sawyer etc.
That is just my perspective though. Personally I like both those names and the way you are using them. If someone were using them the other way around I wouldn't be a fan.
The only Sawyer I know is a boy and it doesn't sound at all feminine to me.
I think of Harper as a girls name, but you never know what people might do!
Sawyer is a boys name to me.
Harper is a girls name to me. Not unisex at all.
Sawyer is becoming enormously popular for both sexes (not sure why---I personally don't find it at all appealing). You run a high risk of having your son not only have 2 other boy Sawyers in his class, but maybe also girl Sawyers.
I haven't ever heard of a boy ever being named Harper (which is also becoming huge for girls right now). I think you would be safe in the sense that your daughter wouldn't have a boy Harper in her class, but she may have 3 other girl Harpers.
Sawyer: Increasingly popular, trendy, and unisex. I actually hear it more often on girls than boys.
Harper: Increasingly popular and trendy name for girls. I've yet to see it used on a boy, but certainly don't rule out the possibility.
Personally I really like SOME unisex names....some I have come across:
Parker
Harper (I LOVE)
Rider/Ryder
Dylan
Haha, this, completely. I really wanted to name my baby after Sawyer from LOST, but...then I met a little boy named Sawyer and he kind of ruined it for me. :-
IMO - Sawyer, boy. Harper, girl. Any different, yuck.
My one cousin has a son named Sawyer.. named after her sister Sayward..
um my favorite boy name turned girl name is Rowan.. (which seems totally femanine to me.. ).. I've met one Rowan and she was a girl
IMO Sawyer is a boys name & Harper is a girls name!
