4MW & WWYD?

so, I *think* we're experiencing the 4MW, aka hell.  le bebe goes to bed around 7pm and he'll wake up around 10:30/11pm and then 3/4am, if not another time in between. he's wide awake, ready to play.  BUT, if I nurse him, he'll go right back to sleep. am I creating a bad habit? I was nursing him around 3/4am previously, so it's that first nursing session I'm concerned about.  I don't want him getting used to it, but I've tried rocking him for a good 15 min without nursing (I don't have the patience to do it longer) and he will not go back to sleep. I was thumbing through the ferber book and it says not to do this, but then it says it's ok if he's eating and not using me as a pacifier (which he's not).

BTW, I'm not doing ferber (yet), I just picked up the book at the library to kind of know what to expect.

sorry to post and run, but he just woke up...

Re: 4MW & WWYD?

  • One of the reasons they go through a wakeful period now is that they are so much more interested in what's going on around them, they're distracted while eating during the day and don't take in as much. So they wake up at night hungry.

If he's actually eating, I say feed him. We always send DH in first for any night wakings for him to attempt to rock/soothe DS back to sleep. If it works, great. If DS is hungry, it won't work and I'll get up and feed him. If I go in first, DS automatically assumes he's getting boob and gets pissed if I just try and rock him.

  • Ah ok, makes sense. MH did get up with him on Fri (when he woke up FOUR times, gah!), but I'm pretty much on my own during the week since I don't have to "get up to go to work." That's our agreement, normally I'm ok with it - but you're right, DS is going to smell me and want to eat:(

better!! I use the sleep positioner so he can't roll over and get pissed. I know you aren't supposed to put anything in the crib but he would.not.sleep. and you?

  • Not bad! We've done both arms out the last five nights, and four of the nights he slept 9-10 hours straight. (We don't talk about the other night. We pretend like the other night never happened.) I'm guessing sometime this week we'll stop wrapping his legs and it'll be all gone.
