Health & Exercise

anyone still exercising at 40 weeks?

I didn't extend my gym membership this month because today is my due date.  I had been swimming up to this point.  I stopped running at 22 weeks because I fell, and even if I wanted to, I'm sort of doing the pregnant waddle at this point, so I don't think running would work.  Any exercises or fitness routines you recommend for these last couple of weeks (or, hopefully days)?

  • WALK! I walked on the treadmill to get labor going. I walked up stairs too. I also did yoga and lifted weight until the end.

    good luck!

  • Like PP said...WALK! Yoga is another great option as it was a workout and relaxation. I can not say enough about exercising as long as you feel good and you have approval from your provider. I was in labor with DS for 46 hours and my doc said that exercise was what saved me from a c-section. With DD my water broke a couple of hours after I went for a run. In both cases I was up and about immediately after their births.

  • How about yoga?
  • I delivered at 36.5 weeks, but I was in the gym 6 days before giving birth and walking up until the day I delivered.

  • Yoga, walking, hiking.  I exercised until the day before I delivered at 40wk3d.

  • I ran, walked and did yoga and weight training, swam and did aqua classes right up until the day I delivered. Just modify as your body and your energy level tell you that you need to.

  • I am 41W1D right now and I am alternating between walking and using my elliptical.  I suggest the elliptical because it is oh-so-much-easier on joints.
  • With baby's 1 and 2 I gave up my gym membership in my third trimester until 3 months after baby.  After that I walked and did light weights at home.  With baby #3 I've been doing Beachbody programs in my living room and I've slowly came off them and only doing Yoga Baby Ballet: Baby on the Way, walking and coaching my daughters soccer team (yes i count that as a workout, LOL!) as a slid into my third trimester with baby 3.

My Step-mom took me on a hike through our pasture to put me into labor with baby #2.  So... go take a hike!  Good Luck!

  • I was pretty much done at the gym around 34w with my first 2 pregnancies and was just walking on my treadmill at home and doing yoga.  With this third pregnancy, I'm still too new (only 7w), but I've maintained my gym time and running so far.

  • I was walking and swimming and doing yoga all the way to my baby's birthday. Heck, I went for a nice walk the day he was born.
  • I'm an exercise addict, but I could only walk, swim and do yoga during my third trimester. After 36 weeks I think I only walked and did yoga because the more intense exercising gave me contractions and was just uncomfortable.

Hopefully if you walk you may help speed things along ;-)
