A family friend was telling me about how after the first month or so of breast feeding ... in between feedings you give them just plain water in a bottle. This seems odd to me. Sorry for coming over form the third tri board, just need to get some people off my back that are badgering me about this ... ugh. Thanks Ladies!!

Re: How soon is Water OK?
That is not ok. Ask your Pedi for backup, and don't cave to other people's expectations. Your instinct is already telling you this is not good. Listen to it!
Your baby is growing and hunger is a sign that they need more food. Filling them up with water would be like starving them (in my book). THey get all they hydration they need from your breastmilk, and the calories in your BM adjusts based on your baby's needs. By not feeding on demand, your supply won't keep up with your LO's needs and you won't be able to keep up with growth spurts, etc. I wouldn't give water until your baby doesn't need BM or formula for its main nutrition (when they are mainly on solid foods).
Go here, read, and then ignore your ignorant friends: https://wholesomebabyfood.momtastic.com/babyneedwater.htm
I agree that the friend is wrong.
Why does she say to give water? If the baby is hungry, she will need milk. I think giving her water would fill her belly and result in less weight gain and lower bm supply for you.
Little Rose is 2 1/2.
This!!!!
Thanks Ladies! I had a gut feeling this was definitely wrong. She said she did it with her daughter to fill her up so she gets longer breaks. In my opinion very, very selfish and now I know bad for their little system! I have had to correct many family and friends over anything from SIDS - to apparently this water thing. I do not listen to most of them and try to do my own research and read books, but I was wanting to other women out there to confirm my findings. Thanks again ladies!! :-)
Ditto the pp. The only time I've been told it's okay to give a baby water is if there's a constipation issue going on. It's addressed in the handbook from my pedi. However, he's talking about less than an oz. once in awhile for a very specific reasoning and as a short term occurence and also under the direction of a physician. He also told me a little water in a syringe sprayed around her mouth lightly was a good way to clean her gums. Again, we're talking like a tsp. not bottles full and for a specific purpose.
Not daily and definitely not to "replace" a feeding. That can lead to all sorts of issues like others have explained already.
yikes...babies need the calories. poor kid.
