Cribs (Poll and Opinion)

I am a new mom to be.  I am trying to find the safest, most reliable crib I can with a price I am comfortable paying.  Any tips?  Does anyone have a crib that they would recommend?

Re: Cribs (Poll and Opinion)

  • I'm a single mom, so money is an issue. My friends daughter is 2 so the crib is pretty new and it was new when she got it, so I'll be using that. I know her personally so I trust it. I would never trust a used crib from Craigslist or a stranger.

  • SS here.

I bought our crib from Kijiji. I researched the type of crib it was and retailed at over $850 and is absolutely gorgeous. We went and checked it out and assembled it and checked out all the hardware. It doesn't have a drop down side. We are extremely pleased with the quality as its solid wood and very sturdy compared to some new ones we looked at. We paid $125.

  • I highly recommend the book Baby Bargains. It gives reviews of brands, what features to look for, prices, all of that. That's helped us decide on a lot of things. It has everything from bottles to furniture.

Thanks for posting the name of the book, I have heard about it but couldn't find the name!  I just bought it for my Nook ($8 cheaper than a regular boo, yay!)

  • We bought our crib from Sears which allowed us to put it on layway. It isn't something we need right now but we want to slowly pay on it for planning ahead.  You might want to check out the Sears Laway plan we are paying $30 every two weeks for 8 weeks.
  • We are going cheap with Ikea.  I know I will get sick of it and not want it as a bed so I don't see much point in a true convertable.  The Ikea ones transform to a toddler bed if we do not have another baby waiting for it at that point in time.

  • I'm an SS, too. The crib we got is from Pottery Barn and retails for $400 and then another $60 for the rails to make it convertible to a toddler bed.  We wouldn't have spent that much except that we had a $500 gift card from our wedding left over and nothing else really to buy at PB.  After tax and shipping and then the gift card, we forked over $35 out of our bank account.

    This exactly.

  • With my  DS I paid about $400 for our crib. But... it has a changing table attached with a dresser underneath (3 drawers) so I figured I saved money on the changing table and dresser that I didn't have to buy. It also helped us save space.

It is also a convertable crib and DS (who is 2 1/2) is using it as a toddler bed. We will transition DS to a more big boy style bed in a couple of months and use the crib for baby #2.

So yes, it was $400 but I think it was a good deal. If you are planning on having more children you might want to consider that as well.

  • There wasn't an option for 100-300, but I figured that's what you meant. I would spend no more than 300, so that's how I voted. Stick out tongue

Echo the CL comment... you just don't want to trust it with something like a crib, carseat, or other device that has safety concerns.

  • I didn't vote b/c you didn't have my price range on there.  Our crib was 299, but we got it at Buy Buy Baby so we could get the 20% discount.  So it was only about $240.  A couple of mos after DS was born we went back and got the converter kit and again used the 20% discount.
