....and i will never make them again.
They were a GIANT pain in the @$$! I knew theyd take awhile since there were several steps involved, so i was prepared for that. But the dipping of them, i was ready to scream. First they started falling apart when i dipped them so i chilled them to get em harder but the chocolate was already a waste becaue there were little bits of cake in it and it just didnt get thin enough the second time i heated it. then i decided to try chocolate chips to dip and they didnt even melt, they just got mushy then burned. i ended up buying a little duncan hines thingy of dipping chocolate and that was lovely and all but of the tops didnt get totally covered because it was a shallow little tub that it came in. so i had to spoon chocolate on top of em and then ran out 3/4 of the way through. THEN i chilled em a little to set the chocolate. when i tried one later, they were NOT as good as id have expected them to be/as good as everyone said. maybe i totally effed em up and thats why i didnt think they were mindblowing, but regarless, im never making them again.
Re: i made cake balls for the first time this weekend...
hahah I was totally expecting a picture and some gloat.
Sorry for the rough time! I too heard they were bad, and I am just not that kind of baker.
i think the thing that irritated me the most is that im usually a bad @$$ baker! i can make a mean apple pie and great chocolate chip cookies but these darn things got the best of me!
As a cake pop lover, I beg you to try again.
This is what I do:
Use a cake mix to make life easier. You can make your own frosting if you like.
Freeze the balls for at least 30 mins before you try to dip them
Only use melted candy pieces (like you get at craft or candy stores) to dip them. Choc chips just don't work the same.
Put them back in the freezer once they're dipped.
ENJOY!
So random, but I ALSO made them this weekend for DD's 1st bday party. I made them in the shape of mini cupcakes and when I tell you they took 3 days to make, I am not joking. Granted, I had to do the steps through her naptime and after she went to sleep, but it took a long time. BUT, they were totally worth it! I also put them in the fridge overnight in between each step (after rolling into balls, after dipping layer 1, after dipping layer 2 and putting on sprinkles). I think that really helped when dipping, cause they were chilled enough not to crumble. I used candy melts from a craft store and it took some patience to melt them without burning them. The praise I got was enough to erase the insanity of it all and I am planning on making pumpkin ones for an H-ween party we have!
Try, try again!!
