What do I say? (Carseats)

So, right now I have a Britax Boulevard 70 on my registry.  I did a lot of research on it an I've heard it's one of the safest on the market.  (Something I think is worth splurging on)  However, I am getting the idea that my mom wants to buy me a Safety 1st Complete Air 65 seat because she keeps asking me about it and what I think...(plus shes been asking a lot about if I want baby stuff for my birthday coming up)

Can anyone give me some input on these two seats?  Am I right to stand by the Britax ?  (side note: I am neither making her get it nor am I asking her to buy it)  I am grateful she would do this for us but I also have to think about the safety of my child.

Thanks!

Re: What do I say? (Carseats)

  • Maybe she already bought it?

Are you using it from birth? If not, then I wouldn't worry about a convertible right now. By the time you actually use it, you will have lost a lot of time of the seat.

  • If you did a lot of research and that's the car seat you want, I wouldn't change my mind. Is it possible that should could put the money toward the Boulevard 70, even though it won't cover the entire cost?

It looks like the one she's suggesting is about $170? While the Boulevard 70 is $320 at BRU, it is only $240 on Amazon (with free shipping and no tax). If it's something she wants to buy for you, that might make a bit of a difference. I would probably share that with her the next time she asks, and offer to pay the $70 difference for the one you really want.

Ditto.  Save your gift cards or budget $ and buy the seat when you need it.

  • Yes, I knew it was more expensive but I put it on there because we planned on buying it.  My registry was designed as more of a shopping list for me.  (Plus, I didn't expect anyone else to spring for an expensive item like the carseat)

To pp good point that maybe she already bought it...I actually would like to use it from birth.

  • Stick with the Boulevard.  It's one of the safest on the market...

  • I would stick with the Boulevard 70, it's the better seat.  You're going to need the infant insert from Britax if you want to use it with a newborn.  Don't use any aftermarket products from other companies to try to make it fit better.

  • I would not even purchase a convertible right now.  By buying it now you will lose a year on it because Britax expires in 6 years.  This is a purchase you should wait on until you need it.  Maybe kindly say this to your mom next time she brings itup, just mention you will be waiting to purchase a convertible until you actually need one becuase of expiration dates and you avoid the situation of it all together with her wanting to buy a seat you don't want.

This.  I would just wait to buy it until you are ready to use it.  The Air is just as safe as the Britax.  The Britax is just much easier to install and the fabric is softer..

  • All car seats that are currently sold meet the exact same safety standards.

Since they're all the same safety wise, the "best" car seat is the one that fits your child and your vehicle. Whether it be the $79 Cosco or the $389 Britax.

You pay more for some models because of upgraded fabric and bells and whistles.

DS is now rocking his Marathon 70. The Britax seats were the only ones on the BRU shelves that fit in my itty-bitty Suzuki hatchback. I went for middle ground and got the Marathon 70. DS was comfortable in it and it properly fit in my car, therefore it was the best seat for DS. It was not the best seat for my wallet.

Yes, I did annoy the stock guys are BRU by making them tote all of the seats outside to my car (store policy is one at a time) so I could see what fit. And then I bought the seat from Amazon since it was about $100 cheaper.

  • The Marathon 70 was worth the extra cost to us because of the features. It was so easy to install and is so easy to adjust. Love it. Agree with PPs that said that the safest car seat is one that is properly installed - the bells and whistles are where the price difference comes into play.

  • All car seats are equally safe when installed and used properly.  The Britax models can be easier to install in many cars, but they are NOT safer.

That said, I agree with the others that you should just wait until you need it to buy the convertible seat (if you are also planning to use an infant seat).  You'll waste about a year of its life with it just sitting in a box.

If you have your heart set on the Britax, maybe go with your mom to BRU and try a few seats in your car.  You might find that you like the Safety 1st seat just as well (or better) than the Britax, or your mom might see that the Britax has some convenience features that are helpful.

But you are definitely NOT compromising your child's safety by getting the less expensive seat.  : )

  • I would stick with the Britax.  (We have two and love them!)

My best friend has the Safety 1st and now hates it.  She said that she tightens the straps and throughout the time in the car they loosen themself and are not as tight as she first makes them.

Also, check out www.albeebaby.com for great prices on baby gear.  We got both of our seats from there.
