Food Allergy

Adding rice to our list :(

DD has been having really bad belly aches for a few weeks and we have been trying to figure out what they are caused by.  We eliminated eggs again and they got a little better, but came back.  I tracked her food and when she was hurting and guessed at rice.  We decided to take it out for a week to see if it made a difference.  3 days of no belly aches and then DH slipped up in letting her choose her own snack the other day and she forgot rice cakes were out.  Within minutes her face was swelling where it touched her, red and bumpy and her tummy hurt.  So rice is out.  This is a hard one for us because we are already gluten free, eat very very few grains, we are corn free by choice (eat organic corn only about once a month due to inflammation) and rice is about all we have left except for quinoa.  Thankfully she loves that.  At least with all the gut healing we are doing some of her other allergies are disappearing, it's just super frustrating to be doing so much work to heal her and have a new one pop up out of nowhere :(

  • I'm so sorry. I have to say, Lyndsay you're so inspiring. Your kids are so lucky to have you.

  • From my understanding that it really rare and it is usually only bc of how it was processed. Did you try organic? Did you get it confirmed by your allergist?

My LO loves puffed Millet cereal. That's a good one to try. It is wheat and gluten free. You can also get Oatmeal and other grains from Bob's Red Mill. They are great and geered towards alleries.

  • ugh! that stinks!!! i'm sorry!

Is it possible to be allergic to white rice but not brown rice?

  • Rice allergy/intolerance is much more common than previously thought.  I'm sorry you're dealing with that; it's so hard to eliminate grains with young kids.  I am unfortunately 100% grain-free myself (all the way down to no corn syrup, maltodextrin, xanthan, table salt, etc...), and it's HARD.  Snacking is no longer a simple thing.

I don't know what all you've had to eliminate, or if you're okay using xanthan gum, sorghum and tapioca, but here's an interesting recipe for Quinoa chocolate chip cookies.

  • I just added rice to my son's list too, and he sounds SO similar to your daughter. Its hard work without rice isn't it, especially at snack time. But hang in there, at least her gut is healing and she has a strong mommy fighting for her - its just a matter of time before she is chomping safely on rice cakes again :o). By the way I took your advice and am trying that gut healing diet for my son and so far so good. Thanks for the hot tip!!!
