Baby Names

Disappointed in a friend's name?

Anyone ever disappointed in a friends name choice? A girlfriend of mine just had a baby and they were team green and keeping the name a secret.  She is really hippy, crunchy granola, yoga instructor, doula, organic kind of person.  I thought for sure her name choice would be fabulous or at least super hipster, but I was really let down! Anyone ever surprised by a name choice like that?

Oh and they named their little girl Madelyn Grace, she is very precious.

  • Yes.  A couple who I think is really classy named their daughter Madison.  I do not consider Madison a classy name.  Just my opinion.

  • One of my very best friends named both of her LOs names that I thought were bad, but I never have said anything to her. I love her just the same and her LOs, even though I think the names are bad and the spellings are worse.

  • Yes, everyone in my family and quite a few of my friends love the trendy, teen mom, youneek names. They think I'm insane for loving the underused classics, like Beatrice and Conrad.

  • Yes.A close friend from high school had a baby boy yesterday. He was always very punk rock and anti-mainstream anything,so I was very interested to see his name choice because I thought it would be something either very classic,or unique to his heritage.
And he named him Kayden. It made me sad.

  • Yes... at first. But once you see them you think, oh, you really are a Madyln. Or in some instances, I really like how the first and middle name sound together so I call them by that (very southern like :)

  • Yes.  There have been multiple names this last year that made me close my eyes and shake my head.

  • Oh, yeah, several.

Bff named her daughter India Adeline.  I knew she'd go for something different, but a geo name?  Really?!

Her SIL named their daughter Rheagan, and her cousin named their baby girl Tommi Jolene- so heck, at least it's better than those.

I had another friend who couldn't decide between Noah and Aiden for awhile.  Thankfully she decided to go with Noah because Aiden means "fiery."

ETA:  I forgot that bff's sister named her daughter Lyric.  I actually feel bad for the grandparents who have to go around telling other older folks these "interesting" names their kids have come up with.

  • Yes, I know a lot of crunchy, hippy moms and there are some interesting names in the group that are pretty out there. But hey, I'm having my own kids so I'll name them.

  • Ehh... I try not to be. Obviously, I wouldn't want to find out that somebody said, "You named her THAT!?" about my daughter.

However, I do get a little irritated when somebody says I can't use a certain name because they might want it if they ever have a baby...
Yeah, that was rude. And we used the name ;)
But for the record, we planned to anyway.

  • Yes, my very best friend is having a girl in January and she announced she is naming her Amelia.  Every time we have one of those "what normal name do you hate?" posts I ALWAYS answer "Amelia".  The name drives me nuts!

  • A former friend of mine named her three children Bruno, Brook and Bruce.  I still use them as my marker for bad names, and I have a friend who gave her daughter a second MN of Godzilla.

  • Yeah, I've posted about this before. I feel like a good majority of my friends tend to go with really traditional name choices. I'm especially disappointed when they pick a much cooler middle name and admit to me that was their first choice, but they weren't confident enough to use it as a first name.

  • Oh yes. Some of the names I see come across my FB feed make me cringe.  They aren't youneek or anything...just tired.  Layla?  Trevor?  I just think more thought could be put into a name sometimes.

Jessica was in the top names well after the 80s. It's a very pretty name, I love it.. coincidently, my name is Jessica and I was born in the 80s. lol

Seriously?!?!?! Why? I can understand some crazy 2nd middle (and even middle names), but that is just dumb!

It actually makes sense for them.  Her husband is really into comic books and Godzilla and stuff like that.  They don't use it openly--like, her parents don't know about it.  Most people think her name is Maya Jane.

Same here! But the name was Kyden. Blah. The parents have names like Josh and Sarah, so maybe they are rebelling...

That's funny, I have a 6 year old daughter named, Nevaeh. I have never personally met another Nevaeh and she is the only one in her school with that name. I still love it. People tell us all the time that they've never heard of that name and how pretty it is. I'm actually surprised that so many people haven't heard of it!

I wonder if it's possible to have that name added to my 2 year old son's name. It would certainly be appropriate. Stick out tongue

  • Yeah, I know a girl who just named her son "Silo" - because I work in the Dairy Industry, that is just plain weird to name your kid after a giant tank to store milk or grain in.  I get Silas but still trying to get used to Silo.  But she's lovely and the baby is adorable, so I'm sure it will work.

  • I get worried when I get announcements or see FB posts, and I am not sure how to pronounce the name.
  • We have had numerous friends name their baby boys Connor. Good name, just frustrating because for us it is a family name but I won't touch it with a 10 foot pole because there are so many of them in our circle. I know I don't have claims on it, but it feels more significant to us due to the family history versus just liking the name.

I hate it when friends have poor reactions to my name ideas when I think their kids' names aren't that great.

BTW... Conrad is our top choice right now!
